State Highway patrol * help numbers

Recently on a trip through Ohio there was a car in front of me that the driver was either drunk or suffering some kind of medical distress as he was all over the road, shoulder and median. I called 911 to report it and got a local fire dept operator who had a bit of difficulty getting the info to the right spot (Ohio State Patrol). I felt a bit bad for tying up what was likely a small podunk town fire dept when I knew I needed the OSP to begin with.

Every state has a sign when you enter it telling you what the free *help number is to call if you need the highway patrol, problem is who the heck can remember them all.

If you could chime in with the * number for your state (or ones you are positive you know) I will put together a list that we could all keep in our trucks.

I'll start,

Ontario *677 (*OPP)
Quebec *4141

All state highway patrols/police should get together and get 1 number, like alot of states now use the 511 number for traffic and road conditions they could do they same thing and have the system automatically connect you to the state that you are in

Not always Greg...and why tie up 911 when they may not be the folks you need.

911 is there for that purpose, a centralized number that is used to report problems.

If the problem with the fire department is as you describe, then that issue needs to be addressed with the fire chief and the state police. Every state's funding of the emergency 911 system actually depends on their ability to forward calls quickly to the right place.

Also in the Road Atlas that you get at the truck stops (that everyone should have) there is a list of numbers AND to help out -

Well I guess that solves everything. Guess my spiffy atlas missed that page at the printers.

I'm glad the numbers are in my atlas - every time I see the sign in Ohio, I wonder how likely I am to remember that number in case of a real emergency....:(

There is a problem with the *alpha listings. If you have a Blackberry or any other phone with just an alpha numeric keyboard, which a lot are nowadays, the letters don't match up with the numbers you need to call. Signs and listings should have the numbers in parenthesis. Jerry Lee
