Has anybody heard about spark plug holes stripping out when changing spark plugs, in a Ford vehicle? I found this Service Bulletin TSB 07-21-2 . :eek:

One of the local plant in my area makes heads for Mustang. They had the same problem plus sparks blowing out while the engine was running. They found out the problem was created when the casting were stopped being made in the US but came from Mexico. The area of the casting which is threaded was not cast hard enough to hold the threads. The problem was corrected but who knows when it will happen again if QC doesn't keep and eye on it.

Spark plug may break off in the engine because the Ford spark plugs come in two pieces I read. This is mainly on Fords that have not had a tune up since the original plugs were put in. There is a special tool you can buy from Ford to help you remove broken spark plugs from the heads. Also, they recommend that you use anti-seize grease on the new plugs when you put them in. That usually fixes the problem after the first tune up. Also, some dealers will charge as much as 1500 bucks to do a tune up if the plugs are broken off inside the heads. That's why I dediced to stick with chevy. But chevy's also have their problems.

Blizzard, it isn't a spark plug issue, it is a quality control issue and it has been for many engines from 1994 (according to my ford contact) to 2008.

The seriousness of this issue seems to be on par with the dreaded dowel pin issue with the millions of Cummins engines and the NTSB and the FTC should have treated both of these the same way they they have treated Toyota's mess.

It seems to apply to the Modular engine aka triton with aluminum heads.

Oh as for the Mustang mess, their QC has been crap for a long time, their unnamed SV supplier rejected two truckloads of heads that were porous that there were 1cm gaps in the casting - no one knows how many are on cars other than Mustangs.

But here is the entire TSB;
