Some detention should start immediately

I got a load offer yesterday afternoon picking up at 1730. Just before I was leaving the house to go to the p/u I was called saying it postponed till 0800 this morning. One more night sleeping in my bed so ok by me. I show up at 0745 and wait outside the locked gate. When I get in about 0758 I'm told they didn't do the paperwork yet and the person who does it won't be in for 30-45 minutes. They knew yesterday this was going out this morning at 0800. They should have had the paperwork ready! This is a case where detention should start immediately for however long it takes them to do what should have already been done.

In a case like this, i'd have to ask, which i'd rather do. Have a loaded truck and wait an hour or so for paperwork, or, be setting somewhere with an empty truck, with no freight in sight. Don't believe i'd look that horse in the mouth too close.

Any way you look at it, an hour or two is an hour or two. Whether they're doing paperwork, getting freight ready, or making whoopy in the back room, they are given that extra hour or two. Yeah, it would torque my gears too, but like the Col said... what would you rather have?

Leo: There is a point where the customer should pay in case of "unreasonable" delay. I don't think any customer would think a few minutes to get the paperwork ready is an unreasonable delay.
Any carrier who tried to bill for a few minutes here and a few minutes there would find its self short of customers very quickly.
Yes, I know it was costing YOU money to have to sit and wait but it was also going to make you money by having a load to haul.
I think you should file it in the "Life's Too Short" folder and not get upset.

I think a one hour grace period is fair. Panther won't pay the driver until after the second hour, which is one hour too long.

Look at the bright side, there are quite a few companies that don't pay anything.

For the several responses pointing out that some detention is expected and at least it was a load I would agree if they hadn't postponed the load from yesterday afternoon till this morning to get it ready. That was the key element in the whole thing. It was scheduled to pick up at 1730 yesterday. They postponed to 0800 this morning to have it ready. If it was the originally contracted time I wouldn't be thrilled with the delay but would chalk it up to "life's too short and this is part of it" as mentioned. It's when they aren't ready at their second contracted time that it should cost detention immediately.

Most contracts specify detention starts 2 hours after the scheduled appointment time. After 10:00 detention would have started regardless of the reasons. Keep in mind this is the industry norm, there isn't much any company you would be leased onto could do to change that.
