Smugglers' Jeep Gets Stuck On US Border Fence

Suspected Mexican smugglers had to abandon their attempt to get into the US after the 4x4 they were in got stuck on top of the 14ft border fence.

US Border Patrol spokesman Spencer Tippets said agents spotted the SUV perched on top of the fence on Tuesday at the border between Arizona and California.

Two people on the Mexican side were trying to free the Jeep when the agents approached. They ran further into Mexico.

The Jeep was empty, but agents say it was probably filled with contraband like marijuana before it got stuck.

The smugglers had built ramps that looked like long ladders to drive up and over the fence.

Geometry was obviously clearly not their strongest subject in school.

I saw that a couple days ago...hilarious. You can imagine that these kind of sights are somewhat common along the border.

That's why it should be a double electrified fence with a minefield about 50 yards wide in between.

I have to wonder how much that setup would cost? How effective the improved fence would be?

My feeling is human ingenuity knows very few boundaries.

exactly...I do think that would require more intelligence though.

It doesn't pay to underestimate the intelligence [or resources] of the enemy - a lesson I hope we got from 9/11.
There are already tunnels under the border, and if I were wanting to move a lot of drugs and/or people from one side to the other, I'd prefer invisible transport, myself.
With entrance and exit points on private property, an underground road doesn't seem too farfetched, does it?

Not at all. I always go with iceberg theory. With the tunnels that they have found, I can only imagine that there a lot more that they havent found...and probably bigger.

There is an episode of Borders Wars on this very thing.....they've constructed trucks like an auto hauler that just backs up to the fence and it can lower a preloaded drug van right over the fence.....and of course they use small mobile cranes as well....the use of submarines is really advancing...the first ones were crude, now they are fully submersible...and much bigger.

Give them incentive, they will come.

When they find tunnels they should just drop some mustard gas into them and cap this side of the tunnel. Dogs could find most of the tunnels fairly easily. IR and other means could detect most attempts before they succeed. It would only take a matter of days before the news of locked borders using lethal force spread to the entire globe. The East German system worked extremely well in it's day, just in the opposite direction to how we need it employed.

My feeling is that like prohibition, the war on drugs has increased disrespect for societies rule of law.

I am getting to believe a few uses of lethal force would serve notice....why give them a chance to retreat under the tunnel only to try elsewhere....

Tunnels are not the issue. Just another method of achieving the smugglers goals The Iron Curtain did not stop all smuggling. Slowed it down yeah. Enough incentive and people still crossed the Iron Curtain.

No, it won't completely stop things but if you have a shoot first, ask questions later policy on the border itself, as you should, and if you have a ZERO tolerance policy including denial of ALL services and ALL finances, as you should, there will be very very very few who choose to violate immigration laws.
