Wow! Diane and I just drove westbound through there last night. It was open then. Glad we slipped through.

The winds were indeed high. Warnings of 45 mph gusts were posted. Our fuel economy went depressingly south as we drove into a vicious headwind from the Nebraska/Wyoming border to the Continental Divide.

Speed limits were reduced to 35 mph for a stretch and I was surprised to see every single trucker obeying them. At the higher elevations snow from the ground blew across the road and formed ice. I saw two trucks jackknifed in the ditches there. Maybe those were the two who ignored the 35 mph before we came through, or maybe the speed limit had not yet been reduced before they wrecked out.

I'm not sure if your talking Elk Mountain and Laramie area. If you are and hit those Santa Anna winds again you can cut thru Laramie on hwy 287 and follow the river around to the other side of the mountain and pick up 80 again. It will protect you from most of the wind and when Elk mountain closes with the weather 287 is usually open. They keep 287 cleaner than the interstate because of less wind and ice.

I forgot Sinclair is over by Evenston. Well if you ever go to Pocatello Id
you can take 191 by Sinclair and it will cut off miles and it's a beautiful drive. Make sure you have fuel no stops up there.
