Shotgun in sleeper

I have heard that it can be against the law to keep a handgun in your sleeper, however I was told that it is perfectly legal to carry a shotgun. So what's the deal do you guys carry guns or have liberals destroyed this industrie too.

Incidently during the Rodney King riots in LA, I was working at a car dealer in Long Beach CA. Prior to the riots they used to make fun of me for being a gun toteing wacko. When the riots broke out one of the managers, asked me to go home and get my pistol to keep in my desk.

The way I understand it from the TN DOT is that you can have a gun in your vehicle but it can't be loaded.

(Carry Guns)
The first thing I would do is make sure the company you haul for does not have a policy against it in the first place.

(This is a great debate to talk about)
On one hand your sleeper is your home and you live out of it most of the time and you should be able to have personal items like a weapon
in your sleeper.

The other hand says, you are driving a commercial truck being out in the public and sleeping in public truck stops. Even if you have a CCW permit it is only good in the state you live in.

My best guess would be you will be up the creek and possibly lose your job if you are caught with a weapon in your vehicle. Unless somebody is breaking your door open and coming in to kill you will be in deep trouble again if you branish a weapon. Lets face it most slugs will nail you before you enter your vehicle. If approached by pan handlers while you are locked into your truck at night who sometimes will rob you if they get a chance. All you simply do is crack down your window only a couple of inches to talk to them and have your hand on the air horn button in case they get aggressive and you feel threatened.

The best legal weapon to carry is a large can of hornet spray, it will shoot a stream up to six feet and nobody will come back for seconds with that stuff in their face, "trust me" I had a friend who sprayed at a hornets nest with the wind in his face and after he sprayed that stuff he went into the house screaming washing out his eyes for several minutes and they thought they were going to take him to the hospital. To this day he will not use that stuff to spray hornets. I asked how did it feel? his reply was I wished I would of cut out my eye balls to stop the intense pain. His eyes were blood red for a couple of days after his attack on that hornet nest.

It is illegal to import a gun of any sort into Canada without a permit.
It is illegal in Canada to transport a firearm unless it is securely locked.
Do not bring a firearm into Canada.
Period.

It is my understanding that in Tennesee you may carry a shotgun in your truck, so long as it is secured in a rack behind the driver's head and accompanied by the confederate "cross bars" flag...

Well, I don't own one because of my temper. It's best that way.

I rather use a hand gun when driving the rig, its easier to shoot at te NY cabbies with a pistol than a shotgun after they cut you off when the truck is moving, its hard to fire a shot gun and steer at the same time :D

Im just kidding of course }>

That would be the "stars and bars" my silly nieve trucker friend.car jackings, home invations, gang attacks,..who stopped the maniac with a knife at the Tennessee grocery store after stabbing 9 people..a private right to carry guy.. stopped him cold ..he dropped his knife and hit the ground..after chasing his last bloody victim out the store.. Hey Rocker..maybe you could have subdued him with a little of "Jewels" folk music..go ahead and sit over there and sing something . The adults will call you when business is taken care of.

We don't carry firearms.

As much as possible, Nicole and I go out of our way to avoid situations where there might be trouble lurking. We are also always well aware of our surroundings and those in the vicinity.

If trouble comes our way and we cannot avoid it, we are both 4th degree black belts (karate). There are also a number of legitimate tools of the trade that can be used a defensive weapons if necessary.

Folks, just briefly, not trying to impress anyone,I was a
Law Enforcement officer for over 20 years, am currently coming home after 1 1/2 years in Afghanistan, doing my research before getting into freight.
Re: keeping a firearm in the truck, it will vary from state to state. Several states have reciprocity with other states recognizing each other's "right to carry" permits, but not all do. There is also the Federal ICC to contend with. I have been told, but never tried to confirm that commercial vehicles are prohibited from keeping firearms in the cab area by ICC regulation. If anyone can quote the reg for me, I'd like to read it,for my own information.
As to whether or not you want to keep a weapon in the truck, that is a personal choice. I personally do not feel comfortable unless I have a firearm with me. That is a matter of choice. I have a lot of training and experience doing so, others may not. If you don't have any experiece with firearms, you are much better off without one. There are obviously other options for self-defense, like the hornet spray idea (I like that one a lot) or pepper spray or the ever popular tire checker type club.
One final note.I am only an ex-cop, not a lawyer, not trying to give legal advice, just wanting to share a (somewhat) informed opinion. Stay safe, hope to see you on the road.

Ok , maybe it is stars and bars instead of "crossbars" but at least I can spell it! I'll keep your thoughts in mind the next time I have a "home invation". It's sad that on the few occasions you post something it is generally filled with contempt for some other poster. Perhaps somebody would take you up on your offer to "tango" if you weren't such a bring down....

I dont own a gun and I havent thought about getting one maybe a shot gun if I were to buy one but to carry it in the truck with Me I dont think so I like the spray plan as it would be a great back up for the tire checker plan I alredy have but thtas if Iam already in the truck as to before I climb in it or out I always look around to see if any thing isnt just right before I do go to the truck and I always try to park under the lights when I park for the break as in case I'm still there come nightfall ....and I watch out for the drivers next to Me as well ......stay safe and stay happy

You know this subject seems to come up every 6 or 8 months.

Carry a firearm in your truck at your expense.

It is a felony to do so in a lot of states regardless if there is a reciprocating agreement with your state– a firearm in a commercial vehicle is different form carrying a weapon with a CCW.

I know in Michigan that you get caught, you may be charged with a felony and in extreme cases, your truck impounded. Many of the LEOs I know are clear on this subject, but also say they will overlook things depending on the attitude.

As for Canada, a friend just got back from there on a hunting trip. Canada is very clear; you register the long gun (rifle) and must leave with it but also must be hunting with it or passing through directly. I know from working with the US border patrol 14 years ago that they don’t care what the excuse is, if it is not documented, it is considered smuggling and you lose your truck. What I did was transport trucks that were seized for guns and drugs from Port Huron to a storage facility for auction and I drove every kind of truck imaginable.

Take a safer alternative and think. You get one a** of a cop who wants to find something and than you will have a felony on your record.

Another point to consider: On the back of the hornet spray it says its a violation of federal law to use the spray in any other manner but what it was intended for(something like that).
In this post 911 world you could be branded a terrorist.
Pepper spray is probably your best defense. You may have to discard at a rest area before entering Canada though. Someone on this forum said it was illegal to bring into canada. You might want to verify that too.

I think that you will find that most pepper sprays are illegal in most states. Michigan and Calf for sure. Canada as well. It seems that government does not want you to be able to defend yourself. The best defense is open eyes. There will never be a way to completly protect yourself. We just have to pay attention to our surroundings and try to avoid bad guys as much as possible.
