Shore Power

I saw an Express 1 Sprinter backed up to the front of a Pilot today. An electrical extension cord ran out the back door of the Sprinter to an outlet behind the package ice machine. Is this a new program offered to E-1 drivers by Pilot?

Doubt it! ;)

I do have to wonder. If you made your own plug for the EV charging stations (that now outnumber EV's)

Could you plug in to one of those for free?

I'm sure it's not a new E-1 program. However, a savy national truckstop might consider such a program . . . with either pay for 24 hours electric or maybe exchange for shower credit. I could see that increasing fuel purchases at any chain that might put such a program in.

ya, i doubt it to. you would be amazed by the number of electrical outlets that are around the truckstops if you take the time to notice. there is one at the base or close to most of their sky signs. i have never done the plugging in thing but do know someone who does it regularly. not rite though.

I saw one in laredo that had one in the wall and had cords off a splitter to 5 other vans around him.

As stated before in another post drivers shouldn't be backed up to the building. That is the only problem I see pilot/TA/loves having with it.

Well, they might have a small problem with drivers stealing electricity.

I do remember reading about a company that got some of our tax money via grants to install shore power at some truck stops. Looked like they might have been installing some at a couple I80 oasis in the truck parking. Don't remember what state I saw it.

I wouldnt mind seeing shore power installed in truckstops. Maybe pay by the hour or day or maybe pay by the power you use kinda like what Idle Air was. All you needed to stay cool or warm would be buying a portable A/C or space heater.

Idle air is supposed to be coming back. That was nice as no heat or air was needed and it offers Internet and cable tv with about 60 channels.

the problem with IdleAir was the charge per hour. I know it's cheaper now, but I don't remember how much. Most of the shore power Ive seen advertised seemed to be priced really high too.

A nice, nationwide network of reasonably priced shore power is what we all need, but that's quite an undertaking.

I know I saw some shore power modules at a truckstop northeast of Charlotte on I-85. I don't remember what exit. Until there is a nationwide network though, we still have to be able to heat and cool our trucks without it, thus eliminating the need for it.

I think Idleair is still around $2 an hour, a bit too much, IMHO. I think an inexpensive electric only service would do well. A lot of us have our trucks outfitted with what Idleair offers and cost effective electricity to save on generator time would be great.

I'm sure it's not a new E-1 program.

Do you mean that this E-1 Sprinter driver may have been stealing electricity? They had placed a piece of plywood over the extension cord to prevent people from tripping over it. That was certainly considerate of them.

Maybe this was a team in the Sprinter and one or both drivers had to spend a certain amount of time in an iron lung.

Maybe the driver was recharging his pace maker.

Maybe a curling iron and lighted make-up mirror were being powered.

Maybe an electric blanket was being used to keep a newborn infant warm.

Maybe Bradley Jacobs purchased the Flying Pilot and made this perk available to E-1 Sprinter drivers.

Maybe this Sprinter was the mobile Utility Muffin Research Kitchen.

Ohio TP is installing shore power stations in their rest areas. They finished the first one (the first rest area going east) and have shut down the second rest area going east from indiana to do the conversion.

I like the idea of electric shore power available to commercial drivers. What they could do, if they wanted to charge a "Small" fee... is require drivers to scan/show their CDL's and be given an access code to unlock a box to the outlets. This way, motorhomes and the general public could not take advantage of the power outlets.

Why can't they copy the RV industry....and just charge for it...
