setting up my new van

After having expedited in STs and TTs, this is my first foray into the world of CVs. I've been in one for a few days now and I'm learning of things I need to do to the van to increase my comfort level.

One, I can't stand sleeping lengthwise in the van. I need to sleep cross-ways, like in a truck. I know there's going to come a time when I have enough freight that prevents me from sleeping front-to-back while I have more time than miles. So I definitely want a mattress that will fit, and my inside width, including the step area just inside the side doors, is about 65". Problem is, the only way to get a reasonably thick mattress that size is to have one custom made, at least as far as I've found so far, and that's cost prohibitive. And I want some sort of platform under it for storage and also to keep me up off the floor. Easier for a 45 year old to get up that way. And I DON'T want a bulkhead, so I know that limits my options in that regard. My google searches turn up nothing useful.

My other question is how to insulate the interior of the van for light, temperature, and sound. I was thinking of acoustic panels that radio stations use in their studio. I think they attach with adhesive backing. I don't know where to get them, though.

What does everybody else use about these things?

Oh, it's a '07 Chevy Express extended.

The ability to sleep, comfortably, while loaded is critical for me. Too many Friday pickups for Monday deliveries where you have to sleep. Being comfortable in general is critical out here, for anyone. When I got my Sprinter having a permanent bunk was top on the list.

Like you I don't want a bulkhead, for several reasons. Sometimes you need to get in front of the freight, either to properly secure it, or to help push it out at the delivery. Others want that bulkhead. To each his own. You do have to be aware of a potential problem with spiders when you don't have a bulkhead, tho. :D

As for a mattress being cost prohibitive, don't be silly. You have to be able to sleep comfortably out here, otherwise you'll want to go home every chance you get, or you'll end up sleeping in motels, both of which will cost you far more than a decent mattress. There are lots of ways to get a mattress made. I had an upholstery place make me one, a 6-inch regular foam mattress ($200), and then I have a 3-inch memory foam laying on top of that. You can get memory foam dirt cheap at Overstock.com ($130) You pay by the thickness, regardless of what mattress size you get. I got a California King size, which gave me enough for my topper, plus an extra one for when and if I wear this one out. I cover everything with a sheet, and put a sleeping bag on top of that. The sheet really doesn't get much dirty, but I change it out every couple of months, and I wash the sleeping bag every 3 or 4 weeks, or more often if it needs it.
