PIERRE -- State legislators would take a temporary cut in pay under a bill introduced in the South Dakota House.
It would reduce lawmaker salaries by 10 percent - to $5,400 - in calendar year 2012.
That's in line with pay cuts the governor and top executives have taken and the budget cut that Gov. Dennis Daugaard is proposing for state government as a whole.
The pay cut for lawmakers would be repealed on Jan. 1, 2013. Legislators would then get a pay raise each year equal to the percentage increase given to state employees.
Legislators also are paid mileage and a per diem to cover living expenses in Pierre during the session.
