Satellite radio

I am interested in a satelite radio unit. What is the diff between XM and Sirius? If I go with XM for example, and then switch to Sirius, do I have to buy a new receiver? What is the difference between the different receivers?
Thanks. :+ :+

The receivers are not compatabile. I have had XM for 3 years now and don't know how I managed to get along without it. I also have it at home. I think if you took a poll most truckers have XM,nothing wrong with Sirrus but XM does have a pure trucking and road channel.

Yo Prof:

Like Rich, we've had the XM for several years and enjoy it in the house, in a boom box we use outside, and in the van. If sports is your thing, you get every baseball game, pre-season and in-season. Golf, of course, is real enjoyable on XM. Sirius, I understand, has all the football games as well as Howard Stern. The prices of each are comparable. Extra receivers on your account are discounted at $7.00 a month. Check out the Web sites for each and see the offerings of each before you decide.

Heya Professor...
My wife got me Sirius because it carries NFL. But I've found some great stations that have kept me going in the wee hours. Awesome conservative station! To tell you the truth, I don't find the trucking stations all that interesting, as they can only go over something for so long before it becomes boring. But if NASCAR or MLB is your cup of tea, go with XM. As there are stereos that are both XM and Sirius compatable (tho you'd have to buy both tuners), I was thinking of getting both. Either one is well worth the price.

Leo (LDB) has both services and is sure to respond to your inquiry.

In the meantime heres my 2 cents worth. There is in development a receiver that wiil allow both services.Of course you need to subscribe to both at $13 ea.

I have had XM since the first week it came out in Nov 01.I cant imagine being without it.There is hardly ever any dropouts in service. Even when the Qualcom drops out,XM is still there.

I have Sirrus and I think the programing is better. XM spent a lot of money for MLB and didnt do much with the other stations and Sirrus seems to have passed them up a bit. IMO

I like a lot of the old time radio programs and I have both services. If one is playing a show I don't like the other one may have a good one. I also like several of the talk programs as well as the Discovery channel. I give XM the nod on non-music and Sirius wins on music, at least for what I like. Either one is far superior to standard radio. I don't know if they still do it but they both used to give a 3 day free trial over the internet so you could check it out and see if you like it.

I have Sirius and could not be in this business without satellite radio. It would be worth it to me even at triple the cost. I went with Sirius because they have the NFL and that made it an easy decision for me. I find that I listen to Fox News for six hours a day or more. It's a great way to pass the time.

A couple of notes about Sirius. They are offering a lifetime subscription through the end of this year for around $500. They say that this offer will not be available after it expires. Maybe it will, I don't know. The risk you are taking, of course, is that Sirius will not be around forever, but I signed up for the lifetime subscription a few months ago and I am happy with my decision. XM does not have such as offer, to my knowledge.

Sirius also offers free internet access to its programming for subscribers. Again, XM does not do this, to my knowledge. This allows me to listen to satellite radio over my laptop computer (which has wireless internet access) when I am sitting in truck stops or am otherwise outside my truck. This is a nice option.

Both services are terrific, however. You can't go wrong with either one of them. I am shocked that all truckers don't have it. For less than $15 a month it is an incredible value for someone who is in their vehicle as much as truck drivers.

I'm about to take a Sirius leap. I'm probably going to do the $500 one-time deal. The only thing giving me pause on that is that they limit you to 3 transfers of your subscription to a new unit. If you have bad luck with defective units or theft this could be an issue. They used to not transfer at all, you only had one shot. When they come out with new and improved product you'll really have to give it some thought.

I have a JVC Sirius that sticks to the windshield of whatever I'm driving, which was cool when I drove a different company truck each time out. It now lives in my van.

The first thing I bought for my "new" truck is a spiffy Kenwood with built in Sirius (model: EZ700SR) and all new speakers to replace the OEM units. Plenty good sound now, you bet!

You should go to the provider web sites and check out what is offered. Sirius got the nod for me due to TONS of music channels, NFL coverage (you have a choice of the "Home" of "Away" broadcasts for each game), lots of college football, NHL, NBA, NASCAR in '07 (maybe sooner) and Howard Stern in Jan. '06.

The way it was explained to me was that there is no limit on the number of equipment changes, there is just a $75 fee each time you upgrade to a new receiver.

Check it out and see if they tell you this when you ask. They told me three free receiver changes a few months back but told me the $75 unlimited changes policy when I actually signed up.

XM also gives you internet access once you are a subscriber. I've never listened to either one outside of the truck but it's there if you want it. On the sports side of things you have to decide which sports you want and choose that service or get both services if you want every sport. I'm not a big sports fan and one thing I REALLY dislike about Sirius is they use a lot of the regular channels for the sports so for however long the game is on you can't listen to Discovery or old time radio or whatever. XM has dedicated sports channels so they don't ruin the regular programming.

Not me, although I think since they raised the rate it's not going to cost extra. XM pulled the same bogus stunt and made opie/anthony included. I'd like to see them get rid of all the dj's and the stern/opie/anthony junk and go back to a more reasonable price.

Howard Stern is too low for even my low tastes. A gal in a bikini puking on a fat guy's stomach is not my kind of entertainment. Or maybe it was a fat guy puking on the bikini'd girl. I don't remember. Also the gal in the bikini lapping up the water from the toilet isn't very entertaining. I like the bikini part, though. I like high class stuff, like Jerry Springer. :+ :+

Professor, do you watch Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy on Fox? Just the commercials remind me of Jerry Springer. I shudder everytime I'm reminded Fox does NFL too. x(
