Salad in a Jar

My new experiment is salad in a jar.

The idea has kept my interest trying to figure out how to make this idea work in the truck.

Both of us enjoy salads but I dislike getting out each bag, cutting up the vegetables and making salads and then cleaning up the mess. i also do not like making a bowl of salad and having some of the stuff wilt.

The idea of making a bunch of salads that will be fresh each day has me excited about salads once again.

I have purchased the jars, a vacuum sealer, and I have started my experiment.

Here is a picture of what I have in mind and I will let you know how it goes.

The vacuum sealing will extend the life of veggies and such for a long long time. You can order vacuum sealer plastic containers off the net, comes with a pump, works great.

Really interested to find out how this works out. We love salads, but I hate when I have to throw some out because we did not eat it fast enough.

Also use a plastic knife to keep the veggies, especially the lettuce, from turning brown. Mrs. Z

I love vacuum sealers.

My only contribution to this idea is an observation from the other day. I bought a rotisserie chicken and as usual I only ate half. The next 2 days I bought side salads from McDonalds and added leftover chicken to them. Not bad, not bad at all. Much better then the soylent green "chicken" they put on their deluxe salads and you can't beat the 99 cent price.

We do the Salad Bar quite a bit. Recently I'll order a dinner, eat the included S&SB, taking the entree, or the bulk of it to go.
For $2 or $3 I'll have a dinner in the fridge to nuke on those secure loads.

Fantastic! Guess I know what I will be picking up the next time I am home. I already have a lot of mason jars just need the vacuum sealer now. Thank you for sharing this.

Here is a link to the blog and how I made the salads.

Fresh Salads - Salad in a Jar

Next time I will fill the jars with the lettuce on top and not so full.

I probably will not add mushrooms to the salad next time

Our daughter said that when she added strawberries the strawberries over powered everything

The snap peas, carrots, bell peppers, and tomatoes were perfect

I was bummed to read about this, because I love salads, and the ability to make a week's worth [for quick grab & go] is especially cool, but - I can't see using/storing the glass jars in the truck. Whether clean or waiting for dishwashing day, they require a lot of space and careful handling, so I avoid glass as much as possible.
Then I wondered: is it feasible to use the same vacuum technique with a heavy [freezer] plastic bag?

Going shopping tomorrow! I can make room for a salad spinner & vacuum pump, no problem.
PS Koozies on the jars? That's pretty funny, lol. :D
