Running the California coast!!

A very dear friend of our told us awhile back that we should run down the CA-1 if we ever had time and this week we were afforded the opportunity to take a slow relocate from Gilroy Ca to LA.
This drive is not for the faint of heart as there are 70 miles of 15mph kiss your butt curves 1500 feet above the ocean..
You will be driving in the clouds and there is nothing on the edge of the fog line but air, rocks and a news story at 6 should you get too close to the edge.
My friends I submit to you it is worth the trip if you get the opportunity!
The views are insane and parking is plentiful.
Although we didn't make it in time to see the Hearst castle
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearst_Castle
we did catch some elephant seals that made the trek sooo worth it.
Here is a link to some of our pics from the drive....

As always using the slideshow will yield the best image view.
Hope you enjoy and greets from Cali.

Gorgeous pics as always, Mike. I lived in Socal for five years, and it's really nice to see that coastline again.

We found ourselves in Ventura today and what a wonderful town..
I put up a 2nd series of photos if anyone is interested.
California is the most beautiful 4 season in a small package state you can find.

I guess it is because of this...

If you're every up there, it's worth the trip to Eureka, CA, on the coast, dead west of Redding. It's near the southern edge of the Redwood Forest. Heading north to the Redwood Forest on Hwy 101, it's a twisted road up the coast. The fog is sometimes so defined up there that out the left window it'll be socked in, and out the right window it will be clear. And the Redwood Forest itself is like something out of Lord of the Rings.

It's a trip to go out of your way for only if you are in a van, though. Hwy 299 between Redding and Eureka is an adventure in itself. 140 miles, but it'll take you 4 hours to drive it. :)

But Eureka itself is a very neat town. It has a lot of very foggy days, but the climate is a nearly dead flat 55 degrees year around, with the average high in the mid to upper 50's and the average lows in the upper 40's to lower 50's. I was there last summer during a "heat wave" and it was sunny and beautiful and 75 degrees, and people were sweating and complaining like it was Memphis in August. :)

It hosts the largest fishing fleet on the Pacific Coast (more than 250 boats), so fresh and dirt cheap seafood is the order of the day. Humbolt bay is home to the largest oyster farm on the west coast. It's a Victorian town, with "gingerbreaded" Victorian homes, mansions, and commercial buildings dating back to the mid-nineteenth century.

The Carson Mansion is likely the most impressive Victorian home in the western hemisphere. It's certainly the most photographed and written about. Since the 1950's it's been home to a private men's club, and has had a wild and wooly tradition ever since. A female attorney in Eureka has been all over them for 30 years, to no avail. :)

Mike,
As always, very cool pics! You got me investigating new cameras :)

Ken,
Cool house! Definately sounds like a cool town to check out if you're out that way.
