With abortion emerging as a sticking point in the health care debate, Politico has dug up a zinger on the Republican National Committee: Its own employee insurance policy covers elective abortions. "We are taking steps to address the issue," says an RNC spokeswoman, adding that the policy goes back to 1991.
The RNC gets its coverage from Cigna, which offers clients the opportunity to opt out of the abortion coverage. The RNC chose not to do so, say Cigna employees. "No surprise," adds a Planned Parenthood official. “It’s an employer that wants to provide standard health benefits for its employees," she said. "That’s why the Stupak amendment goes too far in taking away benefits that women have today.”
