Interesting but at $430.00 a pop, which would mean an $860.00 outlays, I really doubt that I could learn enough t justify the cost.

Maybe some of our resident mechnutnics can figure a better way?

Or...just use the mileage numbers from the engine ECM. Gallons bought minus ECM gallons equals refer gallons.

Re: In-line Flow Meter for Reefer Units

your truck may have a readout on the dash (some Freightliners or Cummins equipped with a Road Relay) or you buy a cheap reader. The mileage data is non proprietary so any HD reader can see it. If you really want to know, you can always ask for a readout any time you are in the shop.

So Joe would only have to purchase a reader? They are pretty cheap?

Re: In-line Flow Meter for Reefer Units

If all you want to do is monitor your reefer fuel useage on a tank by tank basis then no...they are not cheap. However...they do provide great value in a host of other places. A chepo on e-bay would also likely be available for less than the $860 Joe mentioned it would cost. CAT had one that was PDA based a few years back...bet it's cheap now.

My question is...how badly do you need to monitor your reefer fuel useage? If you are doing it for tax reasons...using the full load fuel numbers provided by the reefer OE is much more advantageous.

Looking for a more accurate mpg figure. You have to be able to remove all reefer and APU usage to get to the true picture.

If you want to be that accurate, and don't want to purchase or install a reader/readout device, a second tank is your answer.

Do you have the new QC yet? It will read out this data from your engine I do believe.

No, don't have the new QC yet. I know that a second tank is the answer. Money for that is the issue. I am willing to bet that someone will want paid for that!!

Re: In-line Flow Meter for Reefer Units

True, but I'd bet you could get it done cheaper than the gauge thing (as you would need 2 gauges one for inlet and one for return fuel and then have to do the math....

I just checked and the new QC will provide this info (as well as a bunch of other engine data) for you. Log on to the extranet and look up section 16-2 of the O/O manual.

We are NOT going to put on the meters. Far too expensive. I will look into the new QC thing. Who knows when we will be getting it. Still not even sure that I want it.
