Quick question about gross weight

I was wondering, if you buy a pre-owned truck that is say 33,000 lbs. gvw, when you title it, can you title it for 26,000 lbs. and just haul the lesser weight therefore making it a non-cdl truck? I haul light so I just need a 26,000 lbs. non-cdl truck, but most of the trucks I'm interested in require a cdl.

Thanks,
Jordan

Contact the BMV/DMV in your state and ask them. I bet the rules are different for each state.

I did that once, for about 3 years, then I got my balls nailed to the walls by a Ohio state trooper for doing it. I walked away with 7 tickets for 7 different violations regarding that.

Tennessee says if manufactured GVW is 33000, you can liscense for 26000, but still have to have B CDL. And don't get caught without them. You will be put out of service.

Michigan - I was told that I had a choice, either 32500 or 33,000. Nothing less.

Where are you from?

greg..I don't understand what you are saying. Michigan doesn't have a tag for any less than 32500? If so, how can you tag a 26000? You could put a 32500 on it, but you could only gross 26000 or else you would be over on your GVWR.

That was what I remember, 32500 or 33000 because my truck comes in just under 33000, something like 32955.

There are a number of weights, I think that they have an under 26k plate - remember above 26k they have to take in the apportioned amount for fuel taxes under they don't.

Seems like it would depend on what your steer axle is rated for - MI like many states has a 20K max on any axle so you can't use the full capacity of the drive and most trucks being 12K up front means 32K GVW.
