question on pricing our 03' FL

Hi,

New to the forum here, just wanted to ask about a selling price for our 2003 Freightliner Century, 1,134,500 miles, Standard Sleeper, Twin Screw, 450 ISX Cummins, Eaton Automatic Trans, Carrier APU, 22 Ft Box, 5 rows Etracs, All Michelin Tires with Good Rubber. Right now the Truck is leased to Custom Critical.
We have driven the truck for the past 7 years and we are selling because we are getting into something smaller. The box is in good shape as well, it was skinned because of the "re-branding" and we have a green cab, not white.
Just wanted some feedback from anyone because I have never sold a commercial vehicle before and my wife and I wondering what kind of price we should be asking.

Being over ten years old I don't think FedEx will lease it from somebody else.
Not sure, you may have to ask.
Look in the classifieds for similar trucks.
It will probably be a cash deal or owner- finance.

Yeah, I know we have been grandfathered in at FedEx, didn't know if any other expedite company would be taking on a truck this age. I have been looking at the classifieds and can't quite find anything that would be a comp. Thanks for your feedback.

I'm guessing it'll sell for $10- 15,000 depending on overall condition and history.
Which is a shame. There's so much earning potential left in that truck.
Also for local cartage work.

You'll most likely pay taxes on the sale.

i would say that would be a fair price. dont take the add prices to heart. to many that think what they have is made of gold. really doesnt matter much what all is on a truck. what matters is age. a 6, 7, or 10 year old truck is just that the equipment on it only adds a bit to the value. just because it has a refer & liftgate and is a " whiteglove " truck means nothing to most buyers unless they are buying for that segment of the industry.

also, if you reinvest the money from the sale into the business no capital gains taxes will apply.

With that age and mileage it is starting to lean more towards a massive liability than earning potential, unless the entire drivetrain was rebuilt.

Very true. But that could happen to a newer truck, albeit less likely but those things happen. It's that old question of do you feel lucky lol

Sounds like a good truck , but for me the ISX engine would be a deal killer for me. Way too many issues, give me a Detroit or a Cummins N14.

Also, a class 8 truck in such light duty service can easily go 1.5 million miles trouble free..

I'd advise anyone buying it to hoard money planning on big repairs. You may drive it 3 or 4 years payment free and then sell it by the pound. Without putting much money in it.

There's no guarantee.
I bought a very nice new 1991 FLD with a 3176 Cat. $1700 per month payment. I was in Cat shops 104 days in the first year. That's 2 days per week !
A pre-EGR one payment truck can be good.
Any truck can be bad.

It's the nature of the business.

There is no guarantee with any truck new or old but once you cross that 1 million mile mark or the truck is several years old the risk multiples great which is why banks won't finance the purchase. I would rather buy an older truck because the financial risk of having a $120k machine on the public highways is concerning, that's why I drive an ugly 2005 1.1 million truck rather than financing what I can't afford.

I dunno about that. A class 8 truck like that pulling light loads doing mostly highway is most likely going to run very well for a while longer.I don't know much about class 8 trucks, exepct they can run pretty well for 1.5 million miles. What would make me nervous is the automatic trans. Give me a manual any day. I would rather replace a clutch for a fraction of the cost then an automatic transmisson. That being said, It would be perfect for someone like me actually. The question is would FDCC allow it to stay in the fleet.

There is NOTHING wrong with a 9 year old truck. If it's paid for & making you money who cares how ugly it is. You know what's pretty, green in my pocket.
