Have you found a way to see the California Redwoods in your truck???
If so or not how close did you get? Did you get a rental car?
We are on the west coast and looking forward to a stroll down 395 in Washington State then enjoying scenery in central Oregon dropping back to the 5 from Medford OR past Mt Shasta wait, did I go too far??
Anyone with stories or advice??
I hate to go blind but I will if I have to.

As far as seeing old growth redwoods. If you are not rushed getting from Oregon to the bay area I would recommend cutting west on hwy 199 from Grants Pass,Or to Crescent City,Ca After hitting the Calif state line you will enter into old growth Redwood groves with many pull out areas. Then heading south on Hwy 101 you will follow the coastline down to Eureka. Further down hwy 101 you will enter into Humboldt Redwoods state park, where 101 winds right among the Redwoods. This alternate route only adds 30 miles on a trip from Portland to San Francisco but time wise could add several hours due to some 30mph stretches.
I almost always take this route when returning home from the northwest.(I live in the Santa Rosa area on hwy 101.)

Thanks Jack
been studying Humboldt and travel south on the 101 and am chomping at the bit to go down that direction.
When I get to the Humboldt area are there any off site camping areas close by that will accommodate a 40' camper er uh truck?
Thanks

another place you might try is north of sf. take 101 south to fulton and head west to guerneville and armstrong redwoods state reserve. there are walking trails and really nice redwoods. don't think you can take the truck too far into the park beyound the parking area. the road to the top of the mountain has a nice view but its no place for a d unit. been there a couple times and it was amazing. the really nice part is there is no cell service unless you have at&t. they are the only tower nearby.

you can then travel along the russian river to santa rosa or you can stop in bodega where hitchkochs(sp?) movie the birds was filmed. the town in the movie was called bodega bay but that is farther along the road. if you like clam chowder try the sandpiper in bodega bay.

if you follow hwy 1 further south you can enjoy great scenery and a lot of yanking back and forth on the steering wheel. point reyes has a really good restaurant in town on the east side of the road. i think it is pretty much the only one.

As far as "official" RV parks with hookups I can't help you. There are a lot of them along the way, though.
I would stop at the lil grocery store on 199 in Gasquet,Ca just before entering the Jedediah Smith Redwoods and pick their brain a little. There is also a Hiouchi Info center just beyond Gasquet then you have a 5 or 6 mile run thru the Redwoods with quite a few pullouts where you could pull over and hike inside.
I also didn't mention earlier that you will also be going thru Redwood parks between Crescent City and Eureka. You will also pass some long stretches of coastline with wide camping areas, tables etc. but they do not allow overnite parking on those. (Trouble was people set up camp and would never leave) On my runs between the northwest and home I would stop in Crescent City and park in the big parking lot next to the fishing boats, on the south end of town. The weather is always cool and I find the foghorn at night soothing.
As far as running the coast route, I started doing it in 1978 when the trip from Santa Rosa to Eureka was 7 hours (It is now 4)and still look forward to doing it every chance I get.

Hey we drove down through there last week, we cut over to the coast of Oregon in Aurora and headed over to Lincoln City and went South to Florence then went to Coburn and had maintance done on our truck. Along the way you can see Harbor seals on the rocks below. Plenty of curves and drop offs along the way. Next day we headed south and out 199 to 101 through Cresent City. As you travel down through there take it easy there are places with Hairpin curves with Redwoods on both sides, there is at least one curve where the tree is cut so trucks and RV's don't hit it. Give your self time to enjoy the drive and view.

We took a day rented a car and went up throuh Yosemite, a trip worth taking as is the Sequoia Nat'l park. Another nice trip is down 101 south of San Jose, This time of year you can still see the Elephant Seals, tour the hearst Castle and see Harbor seals along with Sea Otters and the different Vistas. If you have time and Squeeze into the parking area (a pull off on the side of the road)at Salmon Creek take the 1/2 mile hike to the falls over the Jade rock.

My wife and I did it once in a rental car. We left the truck at the Medford OR airport at the FEDEX parking facility. Then we drove up to Crater Lake OR and along the southern OR coast into CA and the redwood forests. There is a lot less stress in a rental car vs a D unit.

##### the luck,
Headed as far as Walla Walla Wa and bleep goes the secret decoder of fun.
Had to make a detour on some less than desirable terrain (650 miles worth) where I sit programming the data logger and awaiting a pick up.
Looks like I will have to put it off awhile longer but business first.
I was sooo happy driving down the road too!!
I looked like that guy from the Encite male enhancement commercial commercial grinning my ##### off with both hands on the wheel.
Hell I even had my gear down and charged to capture the seals, ocean and tree tunnels.
Here is a thought, so this post isn't a total waste how about everyone posting photos from their trip...
It will remind me I have a lot to look forward to.
