We have a 2005 Proheat (ComfortPro, Carrier, Impco) with an under-bunk climate control unit (CCU). For the second time in a year, we have fried the control board inside of the CCU. These are not cheap parts to replace, and I've had my fill. I adore the Kubota engine on these units (except the noise). Ours has roughly 16,000 hours, and still runs like a champ. However, the electronics in the units suck.
At the end of the month, we are replacing the fan-tastic vent with an RV roof AC unit. After some research, I believe the electric load on a roof AC is lower than the CCU unit we currently have. That difference in draw may just be the difference in allowing my bride to cook with AC on, without having to idle the truck engine. A smart man does not inhibit a Puerto Rican from cooking. Further, most have R-134A refrigerant which can be evacuated and recharged by yours truly, instead of the R-22 crap that seems to be stocked only by Mongolian sheep herders.....if you can get one to work on it.
I ran into a guy with this setup last week, but had little time to chat. I'm wondering if the CCU can be unplugged and removed, will the APU control board still allow the engine to start, run, and produce electricity. I guess I'm asking if anyone has done it. I'm looking to completely dump the CCU box completely, replace with an Espar for heat, and have some storage.
Any thoughts are welcome.
And no, she won't shoot anyone.
Except maybe if you stand in the way of the arroz con pollo. Or maybe some flan. Or her beloved bacalao.
