Power of Attorney

I remember reading back in an older post one time, someone saying their carrier wanted them to sign a power of attorney, and being really confused about that.

In investigating our options for getting our own operating authorities, I received a quote from a 'service' which looks after getting a Quebec authority (they're like a different country almost). Part of their 'service' includes a signed power of attorney authorizing them to act as our resident agent, apply for any operating authority licenses/fuel permits, apply for stickers and permits, open mail from the department and answer it, etc.

Sounds all well and good, until you get to the part where they're held harmless and indemnified for all losses and responsibilities, etc.

Think I'll learn to speak French.

PJ... that's normal for an agent to need a POA to file paperwork to the gov on your behalf. I had to do the same thru OOIDA.

I don't know why a carrier would need one, other than from one who owns a truck that's being lease/purchased to another who's signing it on to said company.

I think they think they are a different country - no biggie for me, they want to come over here. Chances are as they transition over to the US side, we will pass the English only amendment.

Seriously I would say get a lawyer. Canadian laws a little bit different then the US and a lawyer can watch over everything for you or at least tell you the pitfalls of a PoA agreement.

I know of one company over here who has a specific agreement to act as a representative for the company. They handle everything from the yearly paper work and getting permits and such but in the agreement it is clear what each party's responsiblity is.
