I'm wondering where Brooms post went? I been too busy to visit much the last few days, and sure have missed out. Anyone fill me in?

Well thats ... ok I guess. I like to hear about it, I didn't know about it but I did get followed on one of my loads by the customer - even knew who was in the car.

Thanks for the response.

What I found odd about this program is that they have always followed their drivers with a third party doing the review. The item that I found interesting is they wait several months to tell you about it. If a driver was found in error somewhere, you are looking at information that is severely dated.
I would think the driver is at somewhat of a disadvantage with this practice.
If something came in as questionable, who would remember a event several months ago?
How is the drivers performance evaluated, and what is their recourse if a issue is reported?
I thought the post was fine.

I wonder if the author got a phone call from his carrier? I do not think these companys want there contractors to know that they are being followed and watched. Too late, the secret is out.

It is no secret at FedEx. They tell drivers about it in orientation.

Phil,
No they don't.

I wasn't told and others who I talked to were never told and a couple of them started later last year.

I can't see why The Fed wouldn't want drivers to know about the program - like carrying concealed, the possibility serves as a deterrent (to driving while stupid, at least).
As I said in the reply that's gone off to cyber neverneverland, it's best to behave (except in the privacy of your home, or sleeper) as if you're under observation, cause these days, you probably are.

I am not saying that they don't want us to know about it but from Phil's point of view, we are not always told....

Spying on drivers has been going on since the early 1970's---Ipersonally know that to be a fact!
Insurance companies do a lot of the spying. These same insurance companies also use sub-contractors to do their detective work. The insurance companies and subs have vehicles that are specially equipped with all kinds of video cameras and recorders which are used to monitor a particular drivers driving habits.
A few of the things noted on an observation report are: date, time, vehicle numbers, number of miles observed, following distance, lane changes, vehicle speed, weather conditions and specific observer comments.
I'm sure everyone agrees there are terrible drivers out there--many of them driving Commercial Vehicles. In a lot of cases if an insurance company feels a driver is un-safe,they will reccommend to the carrier that they insure, that the driver be terminated. The carrier at this point does not have many options. Insurance is expensive and no company wants to run the risk of having their insurance cancelled.
So, its my reccommendation that everyone just drive right and stay on their best behavior. You just might be the next driver to be observed!

You are being watched RE: post disappered

I was also going to point out that this is a long standing tradition in the trucking industry.

The MARKEL insurance company used to be a big player in the truck watching business. Trucks that it underwrote used to place a decal with a large "M" in a conspicuous point on the cab. That way the inspectors knew which truck to observe in the field.

I was looking at a carrier website yesterday; XTL from Alexandria Ontario who were quite upfront that field observation of their units was a part of it's safety program.

I would think that drivers would prefer a professional report rather than a "call in" from an irate motorist.

Many expediters don't come from a trucking background and find some of the industry practices a little unusual.

Yes, they do tell u in orientation. They told us 2 years ago when
we were hired. You can be followed at any time with any load.

I honestly can't recall whether or not FDCC told us about this in orientation but I can say that shortly after we started, we received a copy of a report in the mail from the person/company that was hired to do this.

I can't see how FDCC could be accused of doing something sneaky if they're going to send us a copy of the report!

They told me and didn't tell you. That can only mean one thing....

RE: You are being watched RE: post disappered

We just dealt with this. We drive for an owner, he got a letter from FedEx informing him we were observed doing 61 in a 55 (in IL, who doesn't?). Owner informed us of this, so called CC she told us to talk to safety. Per saftey dept., "they no longer pay companies to observe the trucks", although there are some "how am I driving" companies that do it then send them the reports. They said they (FedEx) doesn't keep record of them, simply forward it to the owner. Take it for what it's worth, but that is what I was told just 2 days ago. The only time we were told by FedEx that we might be followed or checked up on by them or an agent of them, is on the DDPS loads to make sure we were following the policy of those loads, which this load was not.
