Depends on what you're doing. They can be the best company, depending on what you have to offer. As a team with a 24' box, we've run non-stop the last quarter. They aren't taking on new solo straights and vans, however.

They don't run hazmat or out of Canada; tho you can take freight INTO Canada, if you want to. They run us all over the place. They generally don't mess with minis. We rarely get anything less than 400 miles, as a team.

I suggest you call Mark on Monday, and ask questions. He will give you the whole scoop, including average gross for last year. He'll tell you the good and bad. To put it mildly, they're looking for go-getters, who can run hard and manage their money doing it. There's a three week delay for pay. Comcheks, when you need them, are $29 for $300 advance. Despite their shortcomings, those who sign on tend to stay with them. They must be doing something right. I'm going on 5 years. :)

The owners are really good people. They offer really good service and we do alot of freight back and forth with them.

I had a buddy of mine that ran for them for 2-years before getting his own authority. He never had a bad thing to say about them. He drove a 26-foot straight with a tag axle. He has since moved out of the straight with his own company and drives a 53-ft trailer.

Warning: They will not babysit you. From what I hear, they will not advance you 50% when you accept the load like some do, and they probably won't pay you extra to relocate to some predetermined "express center", just so you can sit with 8 other vehicles sportin' the very same logo, just in case their "special" shipper across the street has a good day. They actually expect the contractor to know his own business.

I've never had an issue dealing with C & M as a carrier. Top notch people. I can't think of anyone there that I DON'T like dealing with. They do a lot of different freight from lots of different sectors.

I like it!...Where do I sign up!

Imagine that, a REAL business opportunity for a truly INDEPENDENT O/O and not a guide dog carrier! That leads one by the nose with a 20 cent bone!!

I have worked for them in the past, and they were good people back in the day.But that was in 2000,when companies and drivers could get away with alot more. They have pretty much been running legal, from what I have heard. But I did make excellent money there, but had to run my *** off to do it.Please remember, they require drivers to pay ALL THE INSURANCE.So that 1.25 a mile doesnt end up to be that in the end. And, yes, no fuel card, and advances are outrageous. But, Cal is a great guy,and he has alot of vetran dispatchers there who know what thay are talking about, and doing. They have never steered me wrong, and the $$ has always been good, and right on time. They have always had a great reputation with other carriers as well.Drivers come and go for their own reasons, but all in all,not a bad company to work with.Alot less B.S. to deal with, from a drivers standpoint, unlike the larger carriers.

Well isn't that the way it is supposed to work?

You are a contractor and unless you are self-insured, then you are supposed to pay for your own insurance.

Gregg, last time I checked,Landstar and so many others required you pay the unladen/ bobtail insurance, and physical damage insurance for your vehicle, and they pay the cargo and loaded liability insurance, right?

If I was going to work for someone that wanted me to pay for everything, I might as well just get my own authority and cut out the middle man.

I dont think they require o/o's to pay the cargo ins, though. But that is minimal, anyway.

We have the bobtail/unladen setup like everyone else has. We're also paying a small share of their liability based on a percentage of the trucks monthly gross revenue. As I understand it, this was implemented a few years back after a premium increase due to claims. The percentage is going down and the goal is to eliminate it.

When I was there that small share was 298.00 a month on top of my bobtail/physical damage insurance, and I have a freind that left not too long ago because his share, was close to that as well.

Ceva makes us pay for all the insurance, I thought that this is normal. Then again I am not restricted to only haul for Ceva, because the truck is insured by me, not Ceva.
Do other companies pay for the insurance?

There are quite a few companies (major companies)that pay for the cargo and loaded liability insurance, while the o/o is required to pay the unladen/bobtail and physical damage to the vehicle insurance.

We pay for the loaded liability and the cargo insurance. The contractor has to pay for bobtail and physical damage insurance for his truck. We offer discounted programs directly thru settlement deduction for this. Liability is the most expensive of all of the coverages. Most carriers who pay and provide this will not allow the unit to haul freight for someone other than them. The carrier would be assuming expense and risk for no business purpose. Does CEVA make you have your own authority?

That's what I was wondering, Mr. Elliott. If he was required to have his own authority based on his insurance requirements.Tell Vince I said hello, please.
