Please don't feed the homeless

I would have LOVED to hear the "reason" behind what those police officers were doing, BUT, it is hard to imagine any problem that would have led to this.

Maybe the charity could find a better place to do this? Assuming it was a traffic problem of some sort.

It would be interesting to hear a "history" of the problem, from other than ABC, there could be more to it than they are reporting.

We need MORE involvement of private charities to do this. That is THEIR function to begin with, not governments. There has to be a way to allow for events such as this to take place in a way that meets the needs of everyone.

Oh, don't be so silly. Why, these private organizations helping the homeless are taking away from our government monopoly of the dole. We just can't have that. What will the bureaucrats do if private charities solve the problem they are supposedly handling? How will they justify their existence? You're just being silly.

So your take is that the Feds have went to Raleigh, NC and told the local Gov't to put an end to homeless feeding because they are cutting in on their business? With all due respect, that is a ludicrous notion.

A better consideration is that where ever this is happening it is in a developing area that the city doesn't want the homeless near. It would seem like they are thinking of feeding the homeless in the same manner that many cities view feeding pigeons. If you feed them they will keep coming around here.

RALEIGH: Raleigh mayor pledges solution after police stop charities from feeding homeless | Wake County | NewsObserver.com

In the last month or so, police have been telling these volunteers to pack up their buffet tables, slow cookers and coolers or face being arrested. A city ordinance prohibits individuals or groups from distributing food in city parks without a permit.

But they're working on a solution. It's a little more complicated than the story, and certainly more than the Love Wins Ministries Web site lets on.

In reality the Feds,as in the USDA, and several other government agencies ARE stopping charitable donations from reaching those who could use it. It has been going on for a long time and it is spreading. Link to just ONE example below. Strange how natural meat is no good anymore, but the chemical, antibiotic infested, processed crap is OKEE DOKEE!

No where did that article mention feds or USDA. Indiana has a long standing system enabling hunters to donate venison for homeless use.

Sent from my Fisher Price ABC-123.

So does Michigan, BUT, I was stopped from donating, professionally butchered, wrapped and frozen venison, to the local battered women's shelter. My wife had been taking over venison on an annual basis for almost 10 years when Monroe County stopped it, citing USDA regulations. That's all I know. I now give will not give away any excess meat to anyone unless I know them personally AND know that they really could use the help and will use the meat.

I think a lot of it could be ...liability issues... Someone gets sick at a woman shelter and sues them... They in turn sued the state..

Why are you killing excess deer and ending up with excess meat? Using an assault rifle.

I kill no more than 2 per year, normally only one. I use a either a bolt action rifle, a muzzle loader or a single shot shot gun. I never have to use more than one shot per deer and rarely have to track them as most drop where they stand.

Since I do not have a Class 3 firearms license I do not own an assault rifle. It is illegal to purchase or own an assault rife, to sell an assault rifle, to anyone without a Class 3.

It's not too hard to figure out: some businesses with locations in the area that are open on weekends complained. Not publicly, of course, but they made their feelings known: it's bad for their business - their customers don't enjoy seeing it nearby. Whether the business owner agrees with the customers or not, he/she wants to protect the business, so the unsightly homeless people must go. It's not a new story.
Now the city has to find a way to appease them, without looking mean & uncharitable.
If the businesses who dislike the activity in their vicinity were smart, they'd sponsor the program, and locate it somewhere nearby, but out of the paying customers' line of sight. Win/win.

While I totally agree that the city SHOULD help in finding a more suitable place for this to go on, it is not the cities responsibility to do so.

I agree, it would be FAR better if local business found a way to sponsor this and help to locate a better site.

You misunderstood: it's the city officials that wrote the relevant law against feeding people, and it's the local businesspeople who are demanding that it be enforced. The city needs to placate the businesspeople, [they need their support] without appearing 'heartless' to their constituents [who didn't complain, because it doesn't bother them].
It would be good if the city helped solve the problem, as they wrote the law that caused it, but the sudden push to enforce the law is almost surely coming from local businesses. Which makes them more responsible for finding an amicable solution, IMO.
