Places you wont stay

I have had this question bugging me for a few days and even performed a search here with not so good results. I did find trucks stops listed with bad showers and some that are just listed as nasty. I wanted to know where you just absolutely will not stay, Either it being at a truck stop or a parking lot due to a bad area ?

Figured i'd like to know this now rather than later..lol

Any where Memphis. Don't care what others say, had serious problems there, it is on the top of the truck hijack list and don't like the city at all - worst than Detroit.

Speaknig of Detroit, don't sit within the city limits, too dangerous to sit in many many places unless you know the area you are sitting in. Go out to Canton across from the walmart (Ford rd and 275) or Mound Road north of 696 or another suburb.

A few months ago I am coming home and see this FedEx straight truck sitting in a parking lot where a daylight murder of five people took place at the beginning of the year. This place has had more shootings, stabbings and beatings than more places in the city but nothing ever gets on the news. I notice this truck was from some other state so I knocked on the door and told them they need to move and why. Not only were they rude but they thought they knew it all, telling me it is safe. I was getting into my truck when cops from my township pulled up and told them to get out of there, they are in danger.

The same goes for the truck stop on Fort street at the bridge, don't sit there either. A trucker was robbed the other day and beaten after he gave his money to the pimp who runs the area all while waiting for clearence to go to Canada.

I won't stay anywhere in Gary, IN or at the T/A in West Virginia.
Most of the major truck stops are realitively safe. Stay alert and pay attention to your surroundings when walking through the parking lot.
Also, always check the Walmart locations. They are not all safe.
Ask at the cash register if they have any problems in that area. The cashiers usually know as they have to park in the parking lot everyday.

parking in the front lot is safer for us little guys.

I always check out the parking lot, if it looks trashy then the place is trashy, always out out to the suburbs.

+1 on West Memphis. I'll stop long enough to fill the tank provided it's at least 2 hours after dawn or 2 hours before dusk, otherwise I'm not stopping at all.

Thanks for the responses, im working on a Street and Trips database sorta like Truck Stops Plus but with other things for me, I will remove these places..lol

It can depend on whether you are in a van or a truck. There are some places that I wouldn't consider staying at if I were driving a truck, but have no qualms about doing so in a van. The J or the TA in Dallas, the J in Gary, even the J in West Memphis, they're all fine for vans. Trucks, not so much.

I'm not sure what the qualifiers are for bad truckstops. I driver a van so I'm sure it's different than a big truck. I have a few on my list of no gos....
The J in Birmingham, Al. Totally disgusting...always filthy and they just don't care. Haven't had any safety issues there though.
Anywhere in Gary Indiana. Nuf said.
The J on I-40 west of Nashville. Usually dirty and I get panhandled there even when just stopping in for fuel.
The J in West Memphis seems to be hit and miss. I never have had a problem there but I know a few who have.
Had an attempted Break in at the TA in Franklin, Tn., but I still stay there sometimes.

it depends why you are stopping.Re you asking just for bad truck stops,or bad areas for getting loaded.Ive been doing this for over 30 years,I just got my truck broken into a month ago,they stole the cb radio,i was parked in a Super 8 motel,and probably the trucker next to me did it.my truck was in plain site of the guy in the office,but he wouldnt be able to see the drivers side where the other truck was parked
There are truck stops i wont stay at,not because of theft,but they are just too dirty.
Just remember there is uaually a safety in numbers

I try not to stay home for much then a week....after that the attitude of my 15 y/o daughter starts to wear on me,,,but then again my wife sayes the same thing about me.....but then the woman is a Saint.....God knows she has to be....:D

My daughter has gotten over that part...now at 25 she is just hormonal....*LOL* I don't know how anyone puts up with her!*LOL*

It doesn't get any better Chef....:eek:

it was so easy when they were 5 or 6...;)

yea 5-6 was good..as far as getting better, yea i been there too, her sister is 24...but she is married, she is HIS problem now!!:D

Again thanks for all the responses. The main reason I am asking because when the wife and I start driving, I wanted to see the places that you need or should avoid at all cost. I mean I realize that you have to watch anywhere you park period, but I as Greg mentioned earlier there was that truck stop that wasn't safe and tried to warn someone, I am trying to create this map of places to avoid like the plague before I start..lol.

I have obtained a copy of MS Street and Trips 2010 and entering all the data I have found or am looking for into it. I have found a lot of information either directly from the companies I am entering or from POI factory, so far I have all the major truck stops such as TA, Flying J, Pilot, Loves, Petro, as well as rest areas, Walmarts including a list of walmarts that don't allow parking I also have the data for a lot not sure if all but a lot of scale houses. I do have the data for low clearances but I do not know how accurate it is. Anything you fellow Expediters think I might need to enter into this database please let me know, or once it is finished would like to check it out let me know and if it's ok with the mods ill send it.

About the teenage kids I have been raising kids since I was 19 and they are all (3) either junior or seniors in high school so if any of you wanna trade i'll listen to all offers..lol
