A three-week-old baby has been mauled to death by a pit bull in the US.

The child was staying at the home of a family friend in Detroit when the two-year-old dog attacker her.

She was taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital in the city, but died of her injuries.

Police removed the dog from the house and destroyed it.

They described the baby's death as a tragedy and said no charges would be brought against the animal's owners.

The child had just been fed and was sitting in a car seat on the dining room floor when the dog managed to get into the house

Why do people have these animals as pets?? They have a history of hurting people. I don't get it??

Why do people not watch thier kids? The dog was just protecting it territory. The Parents should be prosecuted.

I have 2 Jack Russell Terriers who've been in our family for years. Yes, I know that's insane by itself but I never have had to watch our children with them. I think it's the breed.

It is how they are raised. I've had pits that wouldn't hurt anything. It was gentle and loved my son from birth up until the dog passed.

It is not the breed, I have had a pit bull and currently have a mix that is obviously a pit. I have never had any concern about either being aggressive. Professional dog trainers have said it is the owners and not the breed but people only pay attention to the aggressive action instead of what lead to it.

Why blame a breed for the ignorance of the people who are attracted to its' 'bad reputation'? Which they proceed to reinforce in every way possible - notice the dog "managed to get into the house" and the neighbor who said "they have a pole in their hand to get in the back yard"? The dog owners are clearly the irresponsible kind who wouldn't own an animal that wasn't a threat, and they ought to be banned from owning animals, IMO.
I don't care for 'pit bulls' [actually Staffordshire terriers] but I owned a Rottweiler for many years, and the perception was the same: the dog is a menace.
When she died at almost 12 yrs old, her favorite 'Scrubbing Bubble' toy - the one she carried to bed every night for years was almost pristine - that's how dangerous she was.

Does the US have a dangerous dogs law? (Breeds that cannot be owned)

There are cities that are trying to ban certain breeds. I've been around pits that were just as gentle as can be. Roll over to get their bellies rubbed types. Then you hear stories about those family pet types of pits going off like this one did. I don't know... I know I wouldn't have one.

EL: many cities have such laws, but I still think it's the people who should be banned for breeding, selling, and owning animals irresponsibly.
