I believe the J just dropped Visa. I still use my MC with no problem and still get my 3% rebate at the Conoco branded locations.

maybe it's because they charge high rates to the retailer for thier services
i had a small gas station once if someone got five dollars on a bank card in gas it cost me more to run the card than the profit on the gas the same with am ex / dicover
and it takes up to 90 days sometimes to get you money
if someone says they didn't make that charge it can take up to an indefent amount of time to colect your money
maybe retailers are going to go back to a cash setup
i can remember when price of fuel goes up profit at retailer goes down
just my 2 cents

According to the article on Landline, it's because they are getting tons of fraudulent chargebacks. One owner said in the last 3 months it's take 260,000 fuelings to recover what they've lost to fraud.

That's a ridiculous amount. I don't know another answer, but the companies shouldn't be required to eat that cost either.

The way I understand it is you can still use visa/mc. But not at the pump. You have to take the card inside to the fuel desk. You can't just swipe the card at the pump. :+ :+

As far back as I can remember, I have swipped a Frequent Fueler card and then a Visa card at the Flying J 4 wheeler or R/V pumps. In recent years, the J hsa limited Visa purchases to $50, but that was no problem for me because I could always pump 20 gallons toward a free shower for $50 or less. Nowadays, the pump will shut down at the $50 mark before the 20 gallons, so I swipe the Frequent Fueler card at the pump, get the fuel, then go inside where there is no Visa card limit.

I still use my Visa card at the J at the rv pumps. Weird thing is that I don't have that $50 limit anymore. So I can fill up my sprinter and get my shower credit.

If the problem is fraudulent use of credit cards, then the solution is preventing the fraud. First, by making people go inside to use the card, showing ID, which is a PITA, but justified, I think. Until they can make the pumps better equipped to detect fraud - last time I deposited a check in the ATM, it scanned the check, providing a copy on my receipt, while photographing me at the same time. Something along those lines would surely reduce fraudulant use of credit cards at the pump, no?

I read of a company that sets up an account that allows the customer to swipe his driver's license and the money is debited from his checking account . Retailers like it because fees are lower than with credit cards .

My wife worked for an internet business and her job was to watch for fraudulent on line orders. Not stolen credit card usage, but "consumer fraud" when a person uses their card but reports it as a fraudulent charge.

If a customer uses a credit card and disputes the charge or the amount charged, the merchant has little evidence to fight a bill from the card company.

They yank the disputed amount right out of the merchant's bank account without giving the merchant the opportunity to prove that it was a legitimate charge.

In those rare instances that the money is returned to the merchant's account, the merchant stills gets billed by the credit card processor for a transaction fee. Yes, it does cost the merchant approximately 1.5-3% of the amount charged to process your credit card transaction.

More money has been lost due to such criminal activities than will ever be spent figthing terrorists. In fact, it is pale by comparison.

Credit card scams by consumers, and the subsequent loss of revenues to the merchants, are making difficult for honest folks to do business.
