Yes people on Bikes. They really think they own the road. The road I live on is a main route for some spandex bike club that think they own the road. Ride right down the middle of the road like they don't see ya, don't stop for stop signs, traffic lights or anything else. Yet run over one and it's capital murder.

Scary as it may be, they do own the road...or at least as much of it as we do. I guess it's not a lot different than the buggy debate we had a while back. I still say when you mix a vehicle of any kind that is going a fraction of the speed of the other faster, heavier vehicles, it's a scary and dangerous mix.

Yes I agree but they should have some idea that Spandex blends in to the back ground.

That reminds me of a snowmobile story. The former spousal unit and I were riding in the U.P. on the marked and groomed, designated snowmobile trails. I come over a hill and I'm staring the lead dog of a sled team right in the face. Time for evasive action. I quickly go right, up over the berm, and I do it one handed as I'm waving to my wife to also move over. My quick thinking to avoid the dogs got me a wave of the middle finger from the musher. I stopped, the wife pulls up and asks if the guy flipped me off, and I said yeah, I think so. Unfreakin' believeable... They would have to be better off on the cross country ski trails.

In some areas bikes must ride against traffic. A stupid law but some places do have it.

We are lucky to be living near the National Training Cener for Triathletes so they use the local two lane roads as their track.
These are pretty narrow roads with no shoulder so talk about a hazard!!
Now, they have managed to get a law passed requiring passing motor vehicles to allow 3 feet of distance from the cyclist.

Think about this.

The bike takes up 2 feet then you move over another 3 feet putting you over the center divider and head on with opposing traffic. I smell disaster, but they are trying to get this law passed on a national level so get ready.

Makes complete sense to me. I see a disaster coming when people do not move over several feet when passing a bike.

With todays traffic I don't agree with mixing bikes and vehicles at all. (I know there are areas it cant be avoided)
Maybe 20 years ago but everything has changed now.Roads have gone down hill,,traffic has gotten thicker,,more trucks and heavy equip on the roads. Nothing wrong with a bike running on the sidewalk,,its approximately 4ft. away,,No reason they cant use. Less and less ppl are walking to the store or using the sidewalks anyways,,the sidewalks are empty for the most part.
I don't agree with all these bike paths that they are building along the curb lanes..To many Lil kids running in them and not really knowing what kinda danger they are really in. Kids wiggle and wobble then fall over. Its just a accident waiting to happen.

The thing that still freaks me out is where people ride bikes on the Interstate, especially at night (don't know if at night is really legal but have seen it too much)

Just yesterday, two amish children were killed and 4 others injured when their pony cart was hit by an SUV. The driver of the pony cart was 10 years old and the cart pulled out in front of the suv

They're not supposed to be on the interstate night or day.

Roads are paid for by taxes. Taxes such as license plates, excise taxes on trucks and truck equipment. They are paid for by a tax on fuel. Bicycles pay NONE of those taxes. No pay, no play. Easy fix. Tax bicycles and equipment and us THAT money to pay for safe, usable bike trails. Otherwise, stay off the road.

Use the sidewalk, now that's fumy. Maybe for the kids just out goofing off but for someone commuting or exercising that makes no sense. You also have the problem of very slow foot traffic mixing with faster bike traffic and people coming out of store or cars crossing paths with bikes. Sidewalks are also a place for people to stop and chat. Mixing bikes with that would not be the way to go.
