Payed Mil.

a few months ago , i had the chance of speaking with a fellow Expediter .
he just cam back from a run ,and was very upset that it took him 170 mil. longer to Del. the load - more then the Payed mil.
after a bit of questioning ,i have dig out that ,not only he did not take the shortest rout (he did not had a GPS ,nor a mapping software)but , well we where in Cleavland and he PU that load in Brownsville , TX.

Never the less , since then i have made myself a habit .
@ the PU doc , i will reset the Hub and the GPS .
and @ the Del. Doc. i will wright it down .
once the load is Delivered , i will get it all in a notepad.

so here are the results :

Payed : 12,705

Hub : 13,401 P+ 5.4%

GPS : 13,645 P+7.3% ,

now that i know that , it is playing into my business plan , and i take that into consideration for every load offer .
my DH mil. is only @ 11.5% (HUB/Payed) and i'm also using that knowledge when i need to DH to a better spot ,or for a far away PU .
knowing and understanding the costs of doing business will keep you in business .

any thoughts ?

I have found that carriers often cut mileage a bit. I don't often argue when it's 20 mi or so. But I ask them how they route it if it's more like 40. I'm waiting for an expedite carrier to tell me, "Well, that customer always uses household(?) miles.", so I can tell them that's the way I'll go.

Well... maybe not. But I'll know to jack up my rate when I suspect the same customer.

What's good for the goose... I'll also mention when there's a high paid mileage compared to the practical route. Every time, tho, it's been, "That's what the customer gave us. But thanx for bringing it up."

Here is a thought, yes in your loads, you may drive a couple miles here or there for food or fuel, but when your dispatch offer says the load is to go 300 miles, and your actul miles are 315,not counting your off route miles, thats a 5% loss of pay.15 miles here or there doesnt seem like much, but lets say you do 125 loads a year, at 15 lost miles for each load, thats lost revenue of 2250 miles.Figure that time the money per loaded mile you make.Nothing to laugh at.Sure there are times you dead head home for free,or do extra miles rather than pay a toll road, but for every dispatch that the miles are off, thats lost revenue for both you and your company.JUST a THOUGHT

Yep, it gets annoying at times. But it's the cost of doing business. If you're running for a company that does it, all you can do is change companies and hope they aren't the same. If you're running for yourself, you make sure your rate covers any 'inconsistencies' that may occur.
