but got hooked up with a o/o who runs fed ex cc and starts on wed with his other driver. as for carrying knives bats or mace i would watch it cause it might be consider a concealed weapon for the knives and the bat

but as for carrying a gun thats a no seeng how all the states have different rules and regulations about conceal and carry

but they should somehow make it possiable too carry a gun as a driver especially with some of these loads they have

I am sort of confused with this weapon thing. I mean this is the second time I read something about a gun or mace being carried on the EO site.

Knives, bats, guns, mace and pepper spray - anything that is not used for the work you do can be considered a weapon.

Look I know something that I am going to pass on to everyone who drives for any company and goes to any automotive company. It can be far worst with a government installation.

If for example you go to a Ford plant, they have the right to inspect your truck. Assuming they do a real inspection and if they find a weapon (again it is what THEY classify as a weapon, but lets assume it is a gun for this example), they will not only hold you for the local authorities AND press charges but they will forbid you from ever entering Ford company property ever again, put you in their not to hire database (which for those who don’t think it exists, dream on) and may forbid your company to do business with them ever again.

This is beside the fact that now you are in legal trouble with the local authorities with a felony and maybe with the DOT and lose your license. The defense cost could be thousands of dollars and you will not be able to file bankruptcy over legal problems. You are an “independent contractor” which also means that your company may also sue you to recoup the cost of lost business (I have been a contractor in IT and other industries and this does happen) and even if they don’t you will not get a dime out of them for you legal bills and may lose your latest settlement.

I have met three drivers that carry a gun, two who work for a fleet owner. I don’t think it is a wise thing blowing through weigh stations and caring a gun, but these three drivers do both. DUMB

Very simple... If you prefer a bat, carry a crowbar or tire thumper instead. If you like mace or pepper spray, carry WD40. If you see trouble coming, and have time, light up a flare.

I've heard the arguements about carrying a gun, and can see both sides of the issue. But fact is, alot of these truckers are cowboys who would use their gun to show muscle or protect their pride. Personally, I don't want to see a showdown at the TA corral. ;)

Just a word of caution on the gun thing, if you come into Florida we have a new gun law,(Oct 1st 2005) basically it states a regular citizen can meet force with force (anywhere not just in their homes anymore) If they feel threatened and/or have the right to be where they are, they have the right to shoot back. eg: carjackings, road rage, etc

If you pull a gun on someone here it might be a wild west style shoot-em up in the street.

All the Panther II ads I've seen in magazines say they are hiring drivers for fleet owners . Just last week an ad appeared in the classifieds of our Sunday paper - drivers needed for fleet owner trucks at Panther II

If you get a conceal carry permit find out what states it reciprocates with and carry it according to the laws of that state. It is not illegal to have a gun in your truck as long is it is carried according to that states laws.

Actually I think it is illegal to carry a gun in a commercial vehicle in a number of states and a number of cities, NYC being one of them. It used to be before a lot of the changes were made to concealed weapons permit process that 48 out of the 50 states recognized another states permit, with exception of Hawaii and New Jersey. The thing is NJ only recognized certain states permits and it didn’t matter if you were a police office unless you were escorting a prisoner, you were not allow to carry in NJ. Since Florida’s was allowing anyone (meaning out of state residents) could apply for a concealed weapon, many states rewrote their laws to change their reciprocating agreements.

The funny thing is that DHS had some stuff about commercial vehicle drivers not being able to carry weapons because of the flap with the pilots wanting to carry weapons but I haven’t been able to find it anywhere since i read it a few months ago.

I am probably wrong on this but the TN DOT told me once that you could carry a gun but it must be unloaded?? So keep it unloaded with a clip close by. I carry a flashlight that has a mace spray on the other end. Believe it's legal as it's primary purpose is a flashlight.

A can of starting fluid, which we probably all have in our trucks is the best defense against the SUB-HUMANS,the ether will put the trash right to sleep, then you can stomp on their heads while waiting for the cops to show up.
