At McDain's Restaurant, in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, kids don't eat free. And starting next week, they don't get to eat at all. Mike Vuick, owner of the Pittsburgh area eatery has just announced a ban on children under 6 at his casual dining establishment.

After receiving noise complaints from customers about crying kids at neighboring tables, Vuick decided to institute the policy, which will go into effect July 16.

In an email to customers, Vuick explained: "We feel that McDain's is not a place for young children. Their volume can't be controlled and many, many times, they have disturbed other customers."

The owner of the "upscale, casual and quiet" restaurant explains to WTAE Local News, he's got nothing against kids in general, but their endless screams at public dinner tables are "the height of being impolite and selfish."

Last year, North Carolina's Olde Salty restaurant made a similar decision. Owner Brenda Armes posted a sign that read "Screaming children will not be tolerated", making it clear to parents when their kids scream, they'll be asked to take it outside. Armes said the move has boosted business, and Vuick is confident his ban will benefit McDain's as well.

But not everyone is on board. Some Monroeville locals are offended that they're being singled out for having young kids, and pointing fingers at noisy adults.

"If they're so concerned about noise, what do they plan to do about the loud people at the bar?" asks one local resident.

It's not illegal to ban kids from eating establishments, but some parents consider the move discriminatory, and potentially a violation of rights for certain special needs kids.

What do you think: are kid-free restaurants a great idea or flat-out wrong?

I think this is a good idea for some restaurants.
If I go to McDonald's I expect to hear and see kids
If I take my wife to a nice restaurant, last thing I want to hear is a screaming kid.
Since smoking is no longer allowed here in Fort Wayne we usually choose to sit in the bar, because children are not allowed.

It's one thing to go to Denny's and see/hear kids, but if I am paying 30 dollars a plate I want my dinner quiet LOL

I know kids act up but I blame the parents, there is no reason a kid should be running around the restaurant, unless it is Chuck E Cheese, and if your kid starts screaming/crying take them outside.

Mc Donalds is the place for kids, they can scream all they want in the playground area. As for me,,I now eat sometimes at

Chick fillet its quiet and nice music and flowers on the tables and the menu is not really setup for kids...I like it there.:D

What I don't understand is the parents that don't discipline their children, I knew if I acted up we would leave the movie, restuarant, grocery store etc. and I'd get spanked.
I am amazed at what some parents allow their kids to do.

Exactly - nail on the head and all that ...... the parents that are going to moan about this are probably going to be the one's who let their children run everywhere, screaming and shouting and the crying, don't forget the crying.

As Dakota stated, there seems to be little discipline out there nowadays.

I see this problem even in my own family.

My Nephew has a 3 year old daughter who was playing with a broom near his car. He was afraid to take the broom away from her because she would have a fit. A 30 year old man afraid of a 3 year old, needless to say she doesn't get discipline at home, but she does when she goes to Grandma's house LOL

I think we all will have similar tales .....

We went out to dinner for our anniversary, which was spoilt by a newborn constantly crying and a toddler (same family) screaming at the top of their lungs ... the parents continued to eat

I remember a few times going to a restaurant, acting up and leaving before the food came.
Or the worst was when my parents went to Dairy Queen and had Banana Splits while me and my sister had nothing!!!

"You don't spank children today," said Judge Jose Longoria. "In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children."

It's not just in public anymore. Spanking in general is now frowned upon, and charges can be brought up against the parents. What a bunch of crap.

I get really irritated when we go out to eat at a nice restaurant and have to listen to screaming children and ineffectual parents. I want to take the parents outside and whip their butts. We would frequent a restaurant that had this posted on their front door.

Geez......I rarely have this problem when going out to dinner, not sure that its some kind of epidemic or something.

Anywho......back to the original question that was posed. It's his establishment and it's not against the law, so where's the problem?

Oh.....I get it, a few people voice their opinion otherwise and now the Government and the Courts want to tell us what to do or how to raise our children. Then throw in, "Kids now a days don't know how to act in public" and "When I was a kid my parents didn't stand for that kind of behavior" and old reliable, "If I acted up in public I'd get a good ole spankin'. If this typical when eating out for those that have commented, I just don't see it.

Again, it's not illegal and it's his establishment, God Bless him.

P.S.
You do realize you are turning into your parents don't you? :D

From what I have read on other forums, everybody is supporting him.

P.S.
I am proud to be compared to my parents. I must be doing something right. :D
