Hi Michael,

Here are a few places that can help you get you started on your own authority:

http://www.roadtax.com/auth2.html

http://www.rivfin.com/csrfi.html

The pros would be that you could look to other sources for loads when your leased carrier does not have one, assuming you are leased. If you are not leased, you will have to find your own shippers/brokers etc. Another con might be that you are responsible for billing, invoicing, collecting bad invoices etc. Not to mention cargo insurance and public liability.

Good luck and keep us informed! ;-)

Thanks,
Lawrence

Try call OOIDA, as I recall they have a group that will help you secure your own authority. The phone number is 1-800-444-5791.
Any owner/op or independent driver should seriously consider joining this organization. They are a great asset in many differnt ways.

I often wonder if is even worthwhile for an owner operator to get his/her own authority.
Look at things from the shippers perspective.
When an Expediter is needed, he is usually need "NOW!!".
That is one reason Carriers hire as many drivers as they do, so someone is available to cover loads when they are offered.
A shipper wants to know who his carrier is, is he responsible? can he cover the load? does he have extra equipment in case of breakdown? can he be contacted in transit?
He also doesn't want someone who will be demanding money, freight bills take time to process.
How can an owner operator even compete with the big carriers - unless he has a customer already in mind.

Own Authority sounds interesting but it might be a panacea : too good to be true.
