I own and drive a van leased to a major expediting company. Is it possible for me to become an independent and cover loads for the Big Guys? Would they ever consider using a 1 van outfit? Would ICC authority be required? What about cargo and liability insurance? Any thoughts, comments or another source I could be steered to would be most appreciated. Thank you, Moot

o/o till i die

Yes it is possible to work for the big guys
Yes you will need authority there is a box on the ap you check stating you will only operate vehicles under 10,000
so you wont be regulated.
Yes you will still need insurance cargo, liab

would i do it with 1 cargo van NO
the loads con-way sends out for bid are all over.one week you may see 10 loads a day out of your area or you may not see any out of your area for weeks.

now if you ran a straight truck at least you would have a chance at getting some decent ltl if no expedites are available.

but by the time you throw panther,con-way,tri-state together and join the expedite allinance you might have something
the insurance is what would stop me if I had just one cargo van

insurance can run around $500 per month plus a downpayment of around 2k

but the rates they pay you are much better than you get as a contractor for them and that offsets the cost a little.

now if you want to try it I suggest you get to buying some of the older cheap trucks.because insurance will be less on these type trucks
find a few good company drivers and take the van loads as they are offered

Funny you mention that, KW. I'm selling my old reliable truck LOL

Independant is fun, but my truck is built for a solo. My nephew wants to get back into the truck with me. So, the old guy has to go.

KW is correct. Without the help of a carrier you will need the majority of resources to keep you running on a consistant basis.
I would also advise you to be prepared of insurance in the range of 5K to 7K per year for late model straight truck if running under your own authority.
Just a FYI.

For what coverage? I got a better quote than I thought, but this was for more than one truck and a 2M policy.
10,000 sounds to high unless you are being penalized through rates because of driving record, credit, or under two years OTR experience.
