Our First week out

Well the wife and I leave the house Sunday evening and park at the TA to go to orientation on Monday morning. We arrive and get our heads full of a lot of good information. I was glad that I had been driving for awhile. I would hate to have to learn log books hazmat and border forms all at once. The forms for crossing the border are a little challenging but I think we will figure it out okay. I really hate the Qualcomm as it knows if you stopped for a 10 min. break which means you MUST log it.(not good when you had that extra cup of coffee)

Truck is all decked out with some cool decals. The TA’s showers were down both days that we were there so we decided to run to the house that night thinking that the Dayton area you should be easy to get out of in the morning.
After getting the things squared away at the house I went out and hit the right message putting us available. Five minutes later we get a call sending us to Columbia City for a run going to Jacksonville, Boy that was quick, anyway I was told that I was 142 miles from the shipper, it was 172 miles, no big deal will get it figured out when the smoke clears.

Get there on time for pickup and ask about my deadhead number, they told me it was on my load offer so get it off of there, because it was my first time with Qualcomm I must have missed it. Checked it again not there sent QC message and got $21.50 hmmmmmmmm 72 miles is what I should be paid for, but they can’t get it done Oh well.

Then comes our empty move offer.....Now let me say that at orientation they were rather adamant about accepting them if you are new because they know there customer base and we don’t. I told the wife that I did not think that we should go south for freight especially late in the week but they may have some information that we don’t. We make the move 297 miles SOUTH and have been sitting ever since. I just hope that this was just a screw up and not how our new company uses Teams in a “D” unit. I think that I will remove the bottom of map page for Florida. Asked if they would move us out of here, Not only NO but H*ll no.. Will call on Sunday Again.

First off, glad your up and running! On Canada, make sure paperwork is filled out before entering border crossing! Very important, check your book or ask dispatch to make sure of form to use. Do not quess! Second on deadhead, they go by there miles not actual, sorry if this will be a problem. Just the way it is, your revenue will be fine, don't panic.
Third you do not log stops of 10 minutes or less. If you draw a line for every move you make you will run out of ink! LOL!!
Florida has not been slow for certain equipment. A "D" unit is desirable down here. Loads are better on Thurs. or Friday over Monday, Tuesday. I understand you want to be profitable, there will always be some deadhead out of a slow area. Remember you are being paid very well to deliver to that area. Don't look at each load as the end of your earnings, but a stepping stone to a profitable month. Try to look at the big picture and don't worry about the small stuff. And lastly smile and enjoy your new career, this is a great business with some of the most professional drivers in the country! Be proud, be professional with your choice and above all else be safe!

While it can be frustrating when you start out, it is a thing of patience. Once you know the companies freight lanes and customers, you will be able to make educated decisions on where to DH to, or what loads you would or would not accept.
You stated you wouldn't go south however knowing where the freight is would determine what direction to go.
For example; If you were in OKC, you may want to consider a southerly move to Dallas. Each company will be different and it just takes a little time.
I would also talk to as many drivers especially the ones representing your company to determine where they are going.
You preferably want someone who has been with your carrier for at least a little while.
Hope that helps

I appreciate the advise, Not knowing the Companies customer base is a definite disadvantage. What I meant was that late in a week you need to get a load before loads start drying up on the weekend, It was my thinking that we would want to be in a hotter area. I agree with both of you that there are times that a move south is the smart move, but I thought the move near Miami on a Friday morning was a little risky. (But as stated I don’t know boo about there customer base.....yet)

I am not to worried about the deadhead pay I figure it will all come out in the wash. (Remember that I came from EGL and I ran at 53% deadhead for the last twelve months with no deadhead pay.) Heck I got .25 per mile on the fuel surcharge compared to the .035 cpm from EGL. All in all not in the panic mode was just hoping for a better middle of the week. (Although 1014 miles is a great start)

I thought that there orientation was very well run, most of the people were very helpful, polite, and knowledgeable. They have a lot of stuff to cover in a very short time (two days). When we left there I think I had enough info to get the job done the way it should be done. I though I was going to cry when they told me that I cannot use my Drivers Daily Log program on my computer, you can’t make a mistake without being warned by the computer. I never had a log book violation in two and half years, (on paper) that might be in jeopardy now. (Will run it on computer to check it for violations before I turn it in I guess) But being a team will make life a lot easier.

I think that the team they will have watching us for the first 45 days might be helpful.

Until then......

Just be patient and ask alot of questions. You will find in a short order of time that it will get easier each week.

We are with Panther II.

The biggest problem that I have with sitting here right now is (other than the obvious) if we had been running nonstop for a few weeks we would have been layed over in Nowhere Idaho. LOL

It's Monday and the start of a new week, we will hopefully be begging for some rest by Friday.

Just curious.. why can't you use your Drivers Daily Log Program? Does Panther not accept the printouts or what?

What companies DO accept them?

Hang in there. Let me tell you I have hired former Panther drivers and every truck I have ever owned is a former Panther truck. They are a big outfit and I have been told by former owners and drivers, you better learn what works and learn it quick. They have so many trucks they do not need to fiddle around with any one truck. A smaller company gives you a better chance to learn and ask questions in my opinion. I can only tell you waht I have been told from the folks that had to give up the trucks. Don't be a slow learner. I am and that is why I did not sign on there. Best of luck.

I as well am confused by Sandra's question or reply? It sounds like an owner has not payed her. Panther is very timely on their settlements.

Well let’s see the transition team called Monday morning and told us to hang there until the afternoon. Got a load offer going from Miami to Laredo TX. But just as we got rolling it was canceled. Called the transition team was told to empty move towards Huntsville AL. We were told that where ever we were we would be first out. We pull into Atlanta around 06:30 Tuesday. I send a message asking where we are on the load board and was told that we are the first out.
( well the team told us the truth and that is a good sign ) And then it happened.......all crap broke loose.

10 mile DH 950 mile run to Long Island
130 mile DH 750 mile run w/ hazmat to Canada
70 mile DH 450 mile run to Peoria IL.
10 mile DH 250 mile run to Missouri
130 mile DH 1850 mile run to CA.
85 mile DH 3050 mile run to Mass.
100 mile DH 850 mile run to MI.

I have a Tuesday Delivery for the MI. Run so today I will take the truck in for two new steer tires and six wheel alignment, will make 04:00 Tues. Del in MI. And come home to Dayton and get the valves adj. And oil service. And go back into service

Some things that happened while out on the road.
We finally got a good offer on our house after six months on the market.
We also were told that we won the weekly pro bill drawing for $500.00
