Orientation for Newbies

Diane and I have run with two carriers in eight years. Having just completed orientation with the second one, we were reminded that there is a lot to learn in a short time when you begin.

You want to do do the job right, but when everything is new and unfamiliar, stress develops as the desire to do it right collides with the unknown while the clock ticks. The apprehension will pass after you do a few loads and get a feel for the system and the paperwork. The more you can learn ahead of time about what what will come at you in the classroom, the less apprehensive you will be when you haul your first load.

Orientation topics include:

Qualcomm unit
Logging
HAZMAT
Bill of Lading/Waybill
Safety
Working with dispatch
Settlements
Canada border crossing
Use of company online resources
Business basics
Truck maintenance reporting
What to do if
...you receive a citation
...you are in an accident
...you are put of service
...you are running late
...etc. etc. etc.
Company acronyms and slang
Phone numbers
PrePass
TripPak
Scan/Fax procedures
Drug tests (if given at orientation)
Use of door seals
Freight securement
Required equipment/devices on truck
Truck inspection
Place signs on truck
Install Qualcomm device
Names of key company personnel
Locations and use of company facilities
Company departments/sister companies (organization chart)
Open door policy
And more

Orientation should be about learning and fun, nothing should be stressful or a problem. It is time to ask questions and participate in the process.

Learning things before hand is a good thing but not always the only thing. Having people step you through the process and mentor you is a great things.
