Imagine that? another failed Government Program.

It hasn't really failed--it has been too successful...
they will refund this and get it going....

It was ALSO industry EXPERTS not government that underestimated this program....

This program will put people back to work at a real job.

Cities, counties. states and feds will collect the sales tax.
It is revenue the states need badly...

you won't hear much of it on this forum...because it may put this admin in some good light....and there is no discussion on good...

Once you get by the first paragraph it is nothing but praise..I am surprised it wasn't edited for content...

Lawmakers are discussing with White House officials where to find funding -- including possibly tapping the government's Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP, a congressional aide said.
Come one Ken, you can't say that government was excluded from responsibility here. They don't "forecast" our taxpayer dollars for the future??

The problem here is that anyone that is not happy with this so-called stimulus is not going to be happy with how the money is spent.

If you have no problem giving $4500 to your next door neighbor to help him purchase a new car then why not just march yourself over to his house and cut him a check?? Pretty bizarre suggestion but that's basically what you're doing.

Now...I'm going to add insult to injury. Chrysler is "double-dipping" on this. STORY HERE.....

Chrysler, you will remember took bailout money, money that comes from you and I. Now here they are adding an "additional" $4500, bringing the total giveaway to $9000!! Now, I don't know about you but I cannot afford to walk next door and hand my neighbor a check for $9000 yet, in reality, that's what I'm being asked to do.

DD and I just purchased a new vehicle last summer, one that we're not giving up to any government program, but it sure would be nice if you'd just mail me that check, Ken, and I'll put it toward the loan!

Now, if you think this program will be helping the job situation, wait till you read my next suggestion.

Everyone knows those "stinky old trucks" emit more pollution than any car out there. Why not have a program such as this for the truckdriver? Think of the jobs saved/created....just think of the bragging rights to that one! This would go much further than the individual's personal vehicle....this would actually help the small business owners that we all are! Instead, what we get (from both sides) is more government intrusion into our lives. More taxes, more interference, to the point that many cannot stay in the biz.

I could go on and on but I'm sure you get the picture.

Juju has my email addy, if you're in agreement with this $9000 give-a-way, I'll be looking forward to your request for my mailing address so that you'll know where to mail my check.....oh, and thank you very much for working so hard to help me, Brudder!!;);)

Now you are picking it apart on sub issues as I expected...example: trucks

it is a simple program nothing more or less....

and the money has already been printed....seems to be a hint they will take some of that TARP money and transfer it where it will do more good....

I agree there has been a lot of no good programs that will produce any sustainable jobs...as in road construction now that is a band aid approach....

My example of the trucks was not "picking apart", it was merely an example of how the government could take the same approach, if they were so inclined, with a far better outcome on the lessening of emissions.

and the money has already been printed....seems to be a hint they will take some of that TARP money and transfer it where it will do more good....

Doesn't matter if it's printed or borrowed....who do you think is ultimately responsible?

Can you explain to me how the cash for clunkers program will create sustainable jobs?

And does this mean that you won't be sending me that check?

Somewhere, Ken is having a panic attack over that one!! If someone knows exactly where to find him, please get to him as quickly as possible and you might want to take the paramedics with you as his heart might need a "jump start"!!

The entire program has nothing to do with clunkers, by the definition of what a clunker is, it is not a 2004 F150 with a small v8 that has 76,000 miles on it but rather the chevy citation that is falling apart form rust and barely runs.

There are stupid limitations of this bill, one is the age and mileage. I can turn in my van and get an SUV which get 2 mpg better all because it is there to spur growth in the decimated auto industry that was the companies fault in the first place?

Why not give me $2500 to get a car I can use that gets better mileage than what I have?

The real 'Experts' had nothing to do with this cluster**** of a law, the marketing experts did at GM and Chrysler, because it is a marketing incentive to prove that the administrations involvement is not a failure - "see we told you there would be sales".

The real issue for me is why are businesses and lease holders getting the benefits that was sold to us as a way for the little guy to get some help. I heard on the radio about a fleet owner turning in pickups and getting the incentives and today I was at my truck and the guy who also parks his equipment there is getting four new vehicles and one h*ll of a savings thanks to this law.

anyone who understands new auto/light truck sales understands that rebates are nothing but a trap...when they stop, sales go down.....so they come back...this is nothing but a GOV rebate...it is doing 2 things, reducing existing inventories, they are not selling vehicles that will be built next month, and they are "stealing" sales from later on....unless the gov plans on continuing this program on a ongoing basis, the sales will fall and so will new vehicle output.....

Nothing here but "smoke and mirrors", and it isn't putting anyone back to work at GM or Chysler that wasn't going to be called back...as a matter of fact, GM is going to layoff more people very soon....

There is a provision for light trucks/work trucks - just go to www.cars.gov for details.

Fact is, this whole deal is a big mess. Car dealers all over the country started taking deals on Cash for Clunkers ahead of the July 24 launch date but after the July 1 announcement. On or about July 25 the feds announced changes in the combined mpg for several "clunkers" that raised their mpg and disqualified them from the program. Then they announce on July 30 that the program is suspended, only to re-announce on July 31 that on again. If a customer had one of these particular cars they would possibly be in the position of having to bring their brand new car back to the dealer, depending on the type of contract they signed. On the other hand, if the dealer gave them a straight up contract by taking the govt's deal at face value, they (the dealer) could be stuck with a worthless clunker if it's not approved by the feds. If the dealer didn't have a contract in place contingent on govt approval of the clunker, they would get stuck for up to $4500 for each unit that doesn't pass muster. No doubt, there will be dealers that will get stuck with this type of situation. In a lot of cases, dealerships will wind up waiting months for their govt checks for clunkers due to the overwhelming surge of clunker paperwork.

Another little known fact - the clunkers don't have to be sent straight to the crusher by the dealers. They can be rendered useless by a process that drains the oil and replaces it with a product that freezes up the engine block. They can then be sold to salvage companies that will cannibalize the parts before sending the hull to the crusher. This creates a salvage value to the clunker that's traded in, and according to the CARS website the dealer must reveal the estimated salvage value to the customer at the time of trade and allow that amount for the clunker in addition to the rebate. That could be another $300-$400 allowed toward the trade.

One more thing - the program was not only underfunded but ill-timed. The dealerships are in between model years and low on inventory right at the time they kick off the program. The deal could have waited until Sept and been funded with $4 Billion that would have paid for approximately 1 million clunkers - a much more significant stimulation of the auto industry at the beginning of the 2010 model year.

There will be more horror stories as this saga unfolds. In the meantime, people will be wondering if they really want these knuckleheads to administer our health care and insurance.

ANY program that has to STEAL money from those who earn it and GIVE to others IS a failure. NO ONE will EVER be able to explain to me how taking MY hard earned wages and GIVING them to someone else so THEY can buy a new car or a house and in the process make it HARDER for ME who EARNED that money to meet my own obligations. To make it short, sweet and CLEAR, SOCIALISM JUST PLAIN SUCKS!!!
Dang on Nazi scum up there should just pack up and leave!!

I believe the site Beck is talking about is the one that DEALERS use to process their clunker trades for rebates. That's not the message you'll get when you first go to the site made for general public access, or for www.fueleconomy.gov where you can determine if your clunker qualifies for the deal.

Great program, you HAVE to destroy the old car. That takes a lot of good, lower cost used cars OFF the market. That drive UP the price of the very cars that lower income people purchase because they cannot afford new ones. THEN, remember this is to "save the Earth", they are going to have to re-cycle, melt, these cars far before their normal time. THAT uses coal, more green house gasses. THEN, more coal etc to build new ones that no one will be able to afford or want. ONLY the government could come up with "stupid stuff" like this and then pat themselfs on the back. Let's see, $4500 for a car (I can't afford to buy one OR even pay for the one I have) AND $8500 for new home buyers (the value of mine is gone) I got an idea!!! King Putz the 1st should just cut me a check for $13,500!! AND make up ALL MY business losses too!! Just make the check out for a cool $75,000, that should do it!! Take it out of the welfare fund!! TAX THOSE bums and leave us workings stiffs alone!!

You're right - it's Big Brother no matter how you slice it. Can you imagine the outcry if the mainstream media heard of this kind of intrusivness coming from the Bush administration? And to think people complained about the Patriot Act.
