OOIDA Says Boycott Indiana Tollroad

SPECIAL REPORT: OOIDA’s Spencer says ‘It’s time to find another route’

That’s the message OOIDA’s Executive Vice President Todd Spencer is sending to truckers who typically travel on the Indiana Toll Road.

The Indiana state government – led by Gov. Mitch Daniels – leased the 157-mile toll road in late June to a Spanish-Australian consortium, Cintra-Macquarie, for $3.85 billion in upfront cash. The private investors will operate and maintain the road while pocketing the toll revenue for the next 75 years.

“There would never be a better time than right now for drivers to choose not to use the Indiana Toll Road and get used to running alternative routes,†Spencer said.

“That’s a way to send the message that as more and more roads are converted to toll roads the secondary highways get more and more of the traffic. If that’s the life they want to live, they ought to be willing to embrace it right now.â€

Spencer said that with so many other states eyeing the prospect of privatizing toll roads, boycotting the Indiana Toll Road would make privatizing existing tolls roads or building more toll roads less appealing to other states.

I started that about 6 weeks ago for both the Indiana and Ohio segments.

I don't recall the exact dates and dollar amounts, but it was not so long ago that Iowa lowered the tolls on I-80 and raised truck speed limits there to lure trucks back on to the tollway. That was after a previous toll increase gave truckers all the incentive they needed to choose other routes. Political pressure from the non-tollway communities rose as people there didn't want more big trucks rolling through.

I reside in Indiana and will not use the toll as long as I can find a route around it.

Once again - TOGETHER we take a step WE can change the way things are done.

I think you are referring to OHIO. As far as I know I80 in IOWA has always been a Freeway.

LOL Redy, I was thinking the same thing about Iowa.

I'll take Ohio most chances I get. The alternative is going out of my way, paying more in fuel, and going 55 or less.

Indiana is another story. I'll take it if I'm crunched for time. But any way I can get around 80 in IN and Chicago, I'll do it. I don't buy fuel in Indiana anymore either, unless the truck is thirsty. They don't give the bang for the buck in cost vs IFTA credit. The state is going to hell in a handbasket, and I'm gonna help it get there by NOT doing my part. ;)

I don't have any maps showing Iowa interstate 80 as a toll road.

If I could avoid it I would avoid it....

Buying fuel, now thats another place we can boycott. Remember, Indiana does not credit all that it collects. Prices I will agree are great, read Leos post on the Fuel purchases.

Indiana is among the biggest non donators of our hard spent $. Why keep it its OURS.....Not yours.....

Better to pay more in IL. than IN.

And not much more. PA and IL aren't much more than their neighbors, yet contribute more than the difference.
