On my first visit to Canada, many years ago, I stopped at an Ontario scale and asked the scalemaster if my van was required to scale there. He said "no, not unless I wanted to stop by". I've never entered a scale in Canada since nor have I been challenged to do so. Perhaps scalemasters in different Provinces would provide different comments.

Not having a written copy of the law, I'd suggest you stop and satisfy yourself in the same manner. You'll feel better as you pass the rarely opend scales.

A few years ago one of our vans was chased down after going by the Tecumseh scale. He was brought back and inspected. The officer sent a letter off to Thompson saying the vans needed to stop. Since then I've talked to a couple of people who have asked at the different scales and it sounds like Sarnia and Tecumseh are the only ones that want the vans to stop. I hav'nt read it myself, but I've heard that the regulation is somewhere around 12,000# and up.

Terry: Allow me to be pedantic here. CANADA does not run any scales. They are run by the province. I have to assume that when you refer to "Canada" you are most likely refering to ONTARIO.
I have no idea and in a quick search couldn't find anything but here is the link to the Ministry of Transport of Ontario website.

It means I was pointing out a petty point about the Canadian polictical structure; but one that I find irksome.

Depends on province and GVW of van. Ontario only requires 1 ton with GVW of 4500kg or more to stop at scales. Quebec and some others require anything over 6600lbs to stop. However the Ministry can stop and inspect any van with commercial plates at anytime they wish.
