How cool to see the company I work for, on the front page of EO!
Everything they put in the article was spot on. Due to the fact that they are located right outside of Detroit, they generally have no problem getting you out, and reeling you back in just as quickly.
I have a wife and 2 young boys- I worked for a competing company out of the Detroit area, and just about went bankrupt, before taking one last chance, and contacting Andy, the General Manager for On Time.
I found out about these guys last year, when I was sitting in an auto plant in Ypsilanti, MI one Sunday waiting for a hi lo, and met one of their van drivers. We shot the bull a little, and when I told him I thought I was on my way out of the business, as much as I loved it, he gave me a pad of paper with the company logo and address information. He simply told me to give these guys a try, and I would not be sorry.
Well, I took the pad of paper, and that Monday, I gave Andy a call and talked to him. They had one opening and as long as my driving record was not a mess, they would give me a shot.
I signed on in November of last year, and have never looked back! Im home all the time, and have not worked a weekend in a while. Andy made it clear to me that they all had families, and they want their drivers to be home with them as much as possible- and he was not joking.
Bob (owner) has a bunch of us running freight for him, but when you are out there, it seems you are the only one working for him. Im never told that I am 5th in line or whatever, for backhauls. The dispatchers give it to me straight. When I get unloaded, I call in and ask them what their advice is. Half the time it is to stay right where I am at, the other half of the time it is to head down the road 50 miles, or if it is later in the evening, get a Motel room and be ready to go in the morning.
I am very happy with my company, and I would suggest that anybody that lives anywhere near Detroit ( I am in Lansing myself) give Andy a call, and see if they have any openings. I look forward to being with these guys for a while.
Oh, and an example of a pretty normal day for me: I get a call at 0800. They ask if I would like to take some freight out to Chicago, ASAP. I immediately head down to Plymouth and pick up the freight. Due to some time restrictions with the shipper, they had a company driver pick it up and bring it back to the Office/Warehouse. I show up, get the stuff on the truck, and go in to tell the office I am leaving. As I walk in the door, Jeff (dispatcher) tells me he has a load already lined up to come right back to Wixom, MI, for a 0600 morning delivery.
So, I get to Chicago, unload, reload about 20 miles away, and am back home by late evening for a few hours sleep. In the morning, I will drive 34 miles to my drop off, unload, and they will probably have me right back out to IN, OH, IL, depending on how my hours are looking of course.
