pantherhatch...I do believe you are new to the biz?

My best advice is....for the first year; work, work, work....look, listen and observe....avoid the pitfalls of the toys of the biz...

Get your business on a solid base as possible...then and only then you can dabble...

I've seen so many fall into the trappings of the gizmos and sort that us more seasoned vets, the toys we have...they came with a price...for some it was too high...and they are not with us now....

Good luck...Ken aka OVM:)

We always scan, if at all possible, rather than fax. It depends what your carrier accepts. I have an all-in-one printer/scanner in the truck, but takes a lot of space in a van. I tell drivers to at least attempt to fax from the receiver, since we have a toll-free fax number. It sure cuts down on those $2 faxes from Flying J or even Kinko's.

In your case it probably works for you....but at carriers like E-1 where trip-pak is free...I can't see the need to have the expense and just another thing rattling around a CV....

I think the first and foremost priority of any rookie would be to learn the basics of the biz first...

Scan --> PDF --> email ... all seem to be free to use.

Unless you are doing things that you need permits for, everything should be emailed to whom ever. If the company is so behind the times or in case of one company who doesn't want the contractor know their email address, then maybe it is time to find another one.

Like OVM said, and some more reasons why. You come out the chute and things seem hunky-dory, but until you see the cycle of business for a whole year, you really don't have an appreciation for when freight goes flat. That one gadget might make that one repair payment that gets you through a tight spot during a slow winter month.

In this business environment it's all about how much you can stash away when business is good. First priority is eliminating any debt. If you have debt, you don't need gadgets. Once debt is eliminated and a saving stash established, you might try buying things the way I do. I see a gadget I want. I save the money to buy it with cash. I put this money in my never to touch retirement stash. I then save up the money to buy the gadget with cash. By this time if I still want the gadget, I buy it. There is a good chance that during the time it took to accumulate the cash, I decide I don't really need the gadget. That unspent cash goes into savings. If nothing else it's an exercise in discipline.

As for the technology, I won't work with a company that hasn't entered the email, wireless age.

and as good as you might think that van is going to run...all this hgwy running has a way of bringing something to the surface...the gadgets, are a luxury item...I don't have a fax nor printer...a fax would be convenient ? Yes..but I get along quite well without it...

Since you didn't ask for financial or business advice, I'll just show you what we use. We use the NEAT RECEIPT scanner, the software will turn anything we scan into a pdf file and then we email. Your scans are sent into an accounting program so that's an advantage too.

If you have no interest in the accounting software you might consider THIS.

Both of these are relatively inexpensive and very handy. Hope this helps.....good luck to you.

How's this for a hillbilly option? Can you take a steady enough photo with your cellphone camera and email the image from the phone? I'm behind the times on my cellphone, but these days many people have everything they need in their phone. Scanning is basically a flat scanned photo. Key would be real good lighting and maybe a piece of plexiglas to keep the paper flat.

Ken....SNAP OUT OF IT....you knew I was gonna say that, didn't ya?

I don't know this man's finances and I don't care, that's none of my business. I'm merely sharing the information that he asked for....MINUS the financial and business advice you and others offered up. (UNREQUESTED) LOL....no need to get your underwear in a bunch!

Mr. Hatch said last week he was waiting for his Fed X decals to dry. I'm hoping to return in early September. As weak as my memory is I thought some thing called "Trans Scan" was availble in most truck stops. I don't recall having to pay for useing it.

I pay $5 a week in an manditory deduct from my settlement for "Trans Flo"...in 2 years I have never used it and never will..

Now, ALL newbies that start in this business are "cash strapped" and should avoid "toys" or the comforts to make their life out here as easy as they can!?!? Please.....

Pantherhatch, it is obvious that you thought back on the PM's you and I shared for a few weeks....keep them in mind do what you feel comfortable with....

Like Diva I too use the "Neat Scanner"......

I know you have set yourself up in the way that will let you do just fine in this or any other business you would have choosen, so again, do what works for you.....

Technically speaking, no one has contributed to the op. It is a question about fax machines. At least highway star is on topic.

Guess I should have expanded on his answer....
Faxing is sooo 10 years ago...
And stated that I agreed and the alternative that WE use is....yadda yadda yadda.......is that better than yanking your (and others) chain for answering a question the man didn't ask??:p

Pantherhatch...good luck and keep that money in your pocket for while....Good Luck
