Older Trucks

I was wondering about some trucks I see for sale on this site that may be over 10 years old for sale in classified ads. Would you still be able to find work with these trucks? I know alot of companies want your equipment to be 5 years old or better, what about people with their own authority finding loads, is it any different or would shippers still not let you haul the load unless the truck was so many years old?

The age requirement for trucks is usually closer to 10 years old as opposed to CV's being 5 years. There are companies that will take the older equipment, some will do it on a case by case basis. I have never heard of shippers checking the age of a truck

gm in cleveland will not allow a truck more than 10 years on their property, they are anal about it, also will not load a straight without an icc bar, so no liftgate trucks are allowed.

My truck is over 10 years old and I have no problem staying busy. But it looks very good, good paint and I keep it clean. I run mostly auto freight and have only been asked once the year of my truck. Was at a GM plant at Spring Hill TN. Was early in the morning and the guard was an elderly lady, so I lied and told her it was a 2003. She wrote it down and never even glanced at the truck.........I was a bad boy that day. I was told by a GM dock superior the issue was more over the age of the box. Old box is more likly to have a weak or rotting floor, bigger chance of a forklift breaking through

Makes sense about the floor in the box. I've seen 'em look so bad, it's like grandma's house 100 years ago, with broken boards, big pieces of splintered wood, cracks, missing planks. I've also seen 'em when they're brand new.....they look like a basketball court.

There are several smaller carriers that will keep the truck running as long as it safe and looks "okay".

I purchased a 93 IH cabover in 06 with 268K actual on it for 3K, put a 30 foot box on it and it is still running strong, looks good, is well maintained and is able to haul some freight (18 spots on the floor). Talk about ROI, wayyyy better than paying for the fedup flagship in my oppinion.
Not the most comfortable machine to live on the road in, but that is why there are motels.
