Inquiring minds want to know, What are the entry costs/fees as well as monthly fee's in this biz. My wife and I are working a budget therefore we could use some input. We have told a wide varity of things and such from various recruiters so we thought we would go to the PEOPLE ...You to get some real input.

Please list the basics and then those that might be considered a creature comfort.

Thanks in advance:)

You need at least six months of household expenses in the bank before you even consider getting into expediting. Especially now with how slow it is.

That is a good place to start. If you are going to driver for an owner 6 months is a good estimate to start with. (the key word here is "start") If you plan on jumping in as an owner operator, a single breakdown could wipe half, if not all of that out. Which are you considering? Please expand on you plans to enter into this business so people know which way to point you.

Good point Tempest. we are looking to start as H/W team for a o/o. Our thoughts are to learn the biz before jumping into ownership.

This is the smartest thing I have seen in a while from someone looking to start in this business.

If you have read very much at all in here then I wont have to tell you the key is RESEARCH. If you havent poked around a bit the best advise to you is read back through the last year at least in the newbies paradise section of this forum. There are many lessons to be learned there rather than out on the road when its too late. I suggest that you read the last 3 or 4 months twice.

I will tell you what fees I pay (I drive a 2004 Sprinter).

Truck insurance: $75/month (this is for a $15000 value van, you will pay more for a more expensive van)
Work accident insurance: the more money I make, the more I pay, up to $50 weekly, when I don't work I pay $0
Qualcomm: $30/week if you work or not.

Fuel depends, but I had months that I paid more than $1000.
I paid my van off, but before, I had $600 a month payment.

So, not counting fuel, work accident insurance and maintenance, every month I had to pay ~$800 whether I made a dime or not.

Ok, here's the budget formula:

A=Gross revenue from the carrier
B=Your expenses
C=Your reserve/operating capital
D=Zero

A - B + C = D

:eek:

Your best bet for income would be to talk to several owners and get try to get an average of what their trucks are making a month. Every truck is different, every driver is different and every company is different.

You sure seem to have a good start on finding out the information you need.

Good Luck!

well lets see, subway charges $5.00 for a crappy foot long. there are two of ya, and if you eat at subway once per day for 30 days, that comes out to $300, oh wait, drinks. 100. vending machines, 100. might get away with 500, par month if you really like subway

Research is most important. Read back through the forums, talk to recruiters, talk to fleet owners and talk to drivers. You will gain a tremendous amount of information.

My husband and I driver for an owner. We have a 40/60 split with our owner. He gets 60% and the fsc (fuel surcharge) and pays for all the fuel as well as all the truck repairs and maintenance, insurance, QC fees etc. He also reimburses us for tolls and provides a fuel card that he keeps loaded with fuel money.

Besides having enough household expense money in the bank before starting, you will also want to consider what you are going to need per week to live out on the road. Even if you prepare all of your own meals in the truck, you are still going to have to replenish your groceries periodically, as well as purchase incidentals such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste etc. You will need some office supplies such as pens, binders and/or folders, calculator, etc to help keep track of and manage your paperwork.

You will need cash on hand for tolls unless your owner provides EZ-Pass (though in OH it isn't accepted). Paper towels, glass cleaner, general spray cleaner (I like the orange stuff :D ) tissues and even toilet paper are nice to have on board. If you are planning on preparing your own meals, you won't want to forget things like plastic wrap and ziplock bags (which are great for a lot of different uses), paper plates and some of those use/reuse/throw away Rubbermaid plastic bowls with lids.

I could list a whole lot more but I think you get the idea. :)

Food... Sure, you can **** away your money at subway, the buffet etc. get a good cooler, make your own sandwich, go to the store, single serve meals heated in the truck stop microwave. I have never spent more than $50 per week on food and that's eatin REAL good. Amazing how people cannot adapt to that program.

So in conclusion one could say....
Once we are placed in a vehicle the only monthly payment would be the QC and insurance. And even then it is my understanding that owner might pay for the QC.

We knew about the food and the toiletries etc. that was a given. Thank good my wife is a darn good cook, and does a heck of a job in our small camper kitchen.

Cell phone and internet card are what we are exploring now. What is going to be the best overall and the costs

Once again a bunch of good folk on this here forum, heck i enjoy reading all the bantering going back and forth.

Please except my invitation to you all to pm me with ideas, comments etc.

P.S. I told my wife we would get a Lug-a-Loo

I am probably naive but what is a lug-a-loo?

We use a Sprint internet card and a sprint phone. You need nationwide coverage. We have found for us it works best and keep our phone bills lower to have a Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T phone. We have the minimum minutes on all three phones and we spend hours on our phones talking to friends and family.

My monthly expenses, which include everything for the truck and my phone/internet is exactly $650 a month.

Sounds high but it is not when you look at the list.

Oh and this is if the truck sits or runs, it is a fix cost.
