ISC 315 Cummins with 450,000 mi. It uses 1 gal. of oil every 5000 mi. No oil leaks. Is this excessive consumption?:+ :+

Sounds excessive to me, but I am no mechanic.

I like your quote, by the way. We need to improve how we control "some" in our society instead of trying to control the device.

I have an ISC 285.

Well if I run hard, very hard that is and idle a lot I have to put in 3 quarts to make up around 4500 miles. I had the blowby checked because I was worried and it was 4.75" up from the original 4.59" but I also have 25,000 miles on it since I got it.

No leaks, no burning just puzzling.

That does sound excessive. Mine is just two yrs. old (ISC 315) with 260K, and it barely uses 1 qt. in 12,000 miles. Hopefully, that doesn't go up much over time. I never go over 13K between changes. I use Mobil Delvac and my oil pressure has been consistently better over the Shell Rotella...

I don't feel that the oil consumption is excessive until you use a gallon or more every 1000 miles. Check with a factory representative to really get the facts on that engine.

A different engine, but, according to the owner's manual, the Sprinter's engine oil consumption can be as high as 0.5% of the fuel consumed. Assuming a 10 mpg fuel consumption rate for the Cummins, that would mean 100 gal fuel for 1000 miles. At 0.5% of fuel consumed, that's max oil consumption of 1/2 gal/1000 miles.

It seems excessive to me. Diane and I drove six different fleet owner trucks in three years with 300,000 to 600,000 miles on them. They were class 8 trucks with Cat or Detroit engines in them. One gallon of oil added between oil changes at 12,000 to 15,000 mile intervals was the norm with those trucks.
