The ohio turnpike commission just met and approved the new speed limit of 70 mph for all vehicles, of course they also voted to raise rates too no doubt.Effective April 1st 2011, or is this just an early gag?

interesting factoid...
Mr. Castrigano also said that while accident counts on the turnpike rose after the commission’s 2004 decision to raise the truck speed limit from 55 to 65, the accident rate for trucks and the overall fatal accident rate on the turnpike have been lower during the ensuing five years than they were before.

That story also mentions that they recommend a drop in the toll for commercial vehicles to attract more of the same to the toll road

Without rereading it,, I think the Lower toll idea came from some sort of letter written by the Ohio trucking union or association be read by the one member that opposed it, and no mention that the Ohio highway dept is considering lower tolls..

They're hoping the increase in speed alone will entice truckers back onto the toll road. Highways 20, 2, even 322 is getting beaten up pretty bad because of the truck traffic. They're hoping to get trucks off those roads and back onto the big road, and they'll try anything short of reduced tolls, like increased speed, to do it. Next they'll be decreasing speeds along sections of hwy 20. Right now it's only half an hour, maybe 45 minutes longer to take the secondary roads, depending on where you're going, but if they can turn that into an hour and a half or more, people will go back to the toll roads. (Or, truckers in droves will use hwy 20 to clog things up even more until they raise the speed limit back again).

The DOT also just love those secondary roads.Trying to get the big trucks back on the big roads.
