Odd FECC Truck

I saw a day cab straight truck with a "texas style" box sleeper at the Flying J outside Lansing Mi. Truck looked new, but I was surprised that fedex would sign a truck like that.

I have seen some in oh area that looks like repainted peneske trucks with sleepers in part of box. A friend leased with fdcc said they run only a limited area and fdcc is looking to do more like regional work they asked him would he consider doing same.

The other day I saw one of those Penske trucks re-painted white...welll, the box, any way, which used to be yellow, judging from the inside....lol...The towmotor guy at Ford couldnt even go inside, it was too low! They ended up dragging it out with straps, which really surprised me...It was leased on with TST, and had some decal on the back door about leasing to own...I thought someone is buying these things, putting a sleeper in the box, and making a killing off of them...

Guido TST has a bunch of these running Ontario-Michigan, I think they order them yellow for some reason (probably leased from Penske). Most are new.

These trucks are Fedex DD trucks and only run in the Midwest. The driver I spoke to said his owner (from Ohio) bought 70 of these from Penske or Ryder and have 10 on the road thus far. The one I saw had a really nice sleeper added in the front/back of the box and joins through to the cab. They do not have escape doors and I thought that was always required by law? Anyway that is what I know about these trucks.

Alot of class 8 straights with factory sleepers dont have escape doors and some do. My 2008 century class had one on each side of sleeper.

Ive always thought it could be a good way to build a nice, large sleeper, solo straight truck. The sleeper would have no air ride other than the air ride suspension...likely a miserable setup for a team.

What Ive kicked around is to buy a new glider kit to bypass emissions, have a box built with a partition built into it at your desired sleeper size and build the sleeper out anyway you like. Im pretty sure I could build out a 100" sleeper truck with this configuration for a fraction of the cost of the custom sleeper trucks on the market.

If you go into the Ford plants much you will notice some of these plants wont go into any straight trucks anymore..For some reason they claim Ford has a policy that prevents them from driving onto a box truck..1 day the forklift will go in the next day they wont???? Kinda dumb but thats the way its been going for better then a year now.

As far as the height of these bananna trucks,(Yellow painted white) I understand they are being bought and sold thru Crew Chief,,sent up into Canada and set up as a Expedite truck with sleeper inside the freight box and white washed..
If you look close it looks like the bottom half of the freight box was cut around the 1ft area and some sort of splice plate added to raise the box height..I think these are the fiber board boxes and it will be interersting how this splice holds up down the road.. I cant remeber the correct name of this stlye of freight box but I seem to remeber (reading) that Ford also has a policy against loading or unloading these fiber boxes (or use to have)???
Im thinking they are called FRP,,(fiberglass reinfored plywood)

You are right on the FRP.
Its common to have forklifts refuse to go into a straight unless you have dolly legs at the rear or if the floor looks weak.
The sleeper in the box may be okay for a solo.
I would think that if a team member ( or passenger) were to be found occupying it while in motion it would be lacking many safetyrequirements; rollover protection, safety restraints, escape window or door, etc.
Why put another human at risk ?

I think there is probably some myths on the safety regs. I would want to do my own research on that. I wouldnt consider it for a team truck anyway though.

Ive never ran the numbers or went very far with the research. I do find it to be an interesting and possibly workable concept for a solo operation. One might also find that the cost is too close to a factory condo sleeper/dry box truck. Both plenty suitable for a solo....and resale would tilt to the factory sleeper.
