Lovely. Now Labor Secretary Hilda Solis wants to regulate farm kids... cuz they're working too hard, and being exploited.



Yeah, it killed me... farm work teaches responsibility, and work ethics. It's family. You work BECAUSE it's your family... my whole family was raised in farm country in Ohio and Kentucky. That's the only way small farms make it.

This is a good part...

The department wants to prohibit hired workers under 16 from operating almost all power-driven equipment unless they have been "enrolled in a vocational education program in agriculture under a recognized state or local educational authority or in a substantially similar program conducted by a private school."

I was driving a tractor at age 10 LOL.. plus trucks in the field.

The proposed rules would prohibit anyone under 18 from working at feed lots and livestock exchanges, among other venues.
And they would prohibit young people from doing any work that would take them more than six feet above ground level or engaging in any activity that would expose them to "unpredictable animal behavior.

Um.. yeah.. and I was feeding cattle, pigs, etc.. I'm still alive.


Just another example of trying to fix something that's not broke.

At the age of 13 or so, i was sent to the far end of the farm with a front loader, to PU a small dead cow.
the thing was bloated like a balloon, and when the tractor touched it, it kinda broke apart.
i had to do several trips.
the tail was still connected to the back legs.

This administration won't be satisfied until all workers are of an age where they can be unionized, period. I'm surprised they haven't started "youth unions" by now.

do you think this is the problem to many of those city boys are makeing the rules today . we the people was farmers and country folk . the city boys drank tea with the British.

Thune questions Labor Department over new rules

It's another example of some officials in Washington being out of touch and disconnected with reality. That's what Sen. John Thune is saying about some new laws, which he fears could affect how families run their farms and ranches.

Thune says he is sending a letter this week to the Department of Labor Secretary urging common sense as the labor department implements new child labor laws. The senator says the rules are written so broadly that they could prevent young people from working at their own family's business.

Thune says, "We don't want some crazy rule that is designed in Washington, D.C. that doesn't take into consideration what it's like to run a family farm in a place like South Dakota, to have the final say in how our family farms are operated and to do things that just don't make sense."

Thune says one of the laws that was successfully blocked recently would have required young people to obtain their commercial driver's license to operate farm equipment. Thune says it's unfortunate that Washington could inhibit the ability of families to make a living.
