No iPhone For Verizon????

Looks like they may be pushing the Android instead....

Once upon a time, this would have disappointed me but now, after having the Droid, I wouldn't choose the iphone over any droid device.

As much as I like to have an iphone or a smart phone, I don't like apples operating practices or how they have a tight control on things.

I mean the retailers can't discount products without explicit permission, the developers up until recently had to deal with a close shop mentality and hardware developers had to adhere to specific standards or threaten with law suits while a the same time Microsoft got nailed for about the what amounted to trivial practices but they had beaten apple by not just having an open shop mentality but also by providing the tools to develop at low cost, not worrying about innovating hardware developers and gave things away for free.

I won't even get into the iPhone application approval issues.

I would think if the roles were reversed, Microsoft would not have an "exclusive" agreement with AT&T for their mPhone.

Oh I have. I used a bunch of them to review and loved a few of them so much I just almost didn't give them back.

I like the OS, I can use a Database with it, I can connect to the truck puter to download stats and so on. I can't with an iPhone, which I have also used including this version.

I just don't own one.

Once I get past this medical crap in a few weeks, I'll get one, most likely the HTC Evo.

Verizon is on my horizon.

As soon as I can dump AT&T with their "dropped calls in major market" plan, I will shop around.

I get a good discount (37%) from AT&T and hope I will get that with another company.

Hey Greg, is there anyone out there making a "telephone" for Verizon? You know, no camera, no internet, numbers big enough for us old guys, loud enough to hear? It should be Milspec for dust and water. It should have bluetooth to keep everyone happy. Just a phone. Wow, would THAT be nice!!

True enough but this is more tool than toy and it's saved our bacon more than once when a FedEx dispatcher was no where to be found!

How did it do that? I don't understand. I have GPS, a map book and internet if I need it, how would ANOTHER expensive "tool" help? If it has a camera I have to turn it in at a lot of places too. Don't like to do that.

I can't hear the ringers on most every phone I have ever used. The sound quality is poor too.

We've had a lot of problems recently that I've hesitated to post. One example is that the agent that books the load doesn't confirm the address of the consignee. You arrive at pickup with an incorrect BOL (embarrassing), you call FedEx to confirm the delivery address because you don't just take the shipper's word for it, you have to go where the Fed sends you. Dispatch tells you to go ahead and leave the shipper, they will straighten the problem out and get back to you. So you drive and wait and drive and wait and finally you remember your smart phone. With the push of a couple of buttons you speak the name and city of the company you're going to and lo and behold.....there it is. Oh and dispatch never did get back to us. This is only one we've had recently...I could say more but I won't.

As far as the sound quality you speak of.....how can I ask this delicately.....are you using a top of the line phone or do you settle for the lesser?? It makes a difference.

We have internet as well but I can do this on the fly if I need to.

As far as the camera phone....we once knew a white glove couple that kept old phones in the truck and those were the ones they handed over at the gate while their good ones were tucked away. This came from them turning over a camera in it's case once and returning to an empty case.

My phone cost me around $250. It is a Casio sumthin or nuther. a G'Zone one I think. It is dust and water resistant. The numbers are too small to use. The sound quality is poor. It does NOT have a camera but they no longer make it that way.

It has a lot of junk I don't use. I don't text, use the internet, down load songs or anything else. I talk on it.

We have used our internet to look up places like that. I don't see an advantage there. Do they work on the internet where my other internet won't? I have verision internet.

No, it really doesn't do anything that you can't do with your computer but as I said, you can't use your computer on the fly so it's a convenience more than anything. If I want a fast look at anything that I would normally look at on my computer, I can do that.

One of the applications that I use the most is Radar now. Within seconds you can see the radar view of your current location. I don't like storms (tornado in 74) and I appreciate being able to see if a storm has finished or if there's more on the way, etc. as well as all the watches and warnings.

As I said, it's more of a tool....a mini-computer if you will.

How well do they stand up to falling in the water? Heavy dust? Getting smashed up against freight?

I am still confused. We use our computer on the fly all the time. I guess I am just an ole stick in the mud.

I looked at some of those fancy dohickeys, the numbers/letters are SO small I needed two pair of reading glasses to see them. I would be happy if my phone was 1/3 BIGGER than it is. THEN maybe I could use it.

That radar joobberdoobber sounds cool.

If you're looking for rugged, maybe THIS ONE would work.

I have the Motorola Droid and love it, living in the midwest with the many storms and weather fronts, the radar is a valuable tool. Not sure what you use but I have the WeatherBug app and it sends alerts of upcoming weather, this is a free app BTW.
It is a mini computer and I use it alot while waiting to be unload at stops.
I don't really use the keyboard too often, my fingers are to large to get to the top line. The virtual keyboard is the one I use most often with no problems. I was considering the HTC droid since it didn't have the slide out keyboard, but the screen was slightly smaller. If they come out with one with a larger screen but no keyboard, I might opt for that when upgrade time comes.
If you get one bypass the accessories counter and go straight to Amazon.com I got everything I need charger, cover and screen protectors for a great price, the phone stores markup on these items is ridiculous. I use the Seidio case since it had the best reviews and it is nice, it doesn't make the phone more bulky like the bodyglove case does.
At this point if Verizon picked up the Iphone I'd stick with my Droid:D
Almost forgot how many times I use the yellowbook app to look up phone numbers for the companies I am delivering too. Much quicker then calling the dispatcher who has to call the forwarder to get the info I LOVE IT

Dakota, I use both the WeatherBug and the Weather Channel apps. One is set for the weather at home with a widget on my home page and the other one is used to find the forecasts for current location. While I use the radar on both of these apps, the one I was talking about is RADAR NOW because I don't have to do anything but open it and it's always set to current location. Try it, I think you'll like it.

I'll try that, do you notice it killing your battery at all?

Getting a 37% discount for AT&T is like going to McDonalds and hearing, "I gave you extra fries because they're burned."
