Our local fox affiliate in Indianapolis ran this today. The news clip is about tt jobs but it relates to the shape of the industry in general.

Reporters like this irritate me to no end . I'd like to see trucking school graduates that can't find jobs tar and feather these reporters and run them out of town . The only thing "flourishing" in the industry is trucking schools exploiting desperate people with false promises .

this is a perfect example how different people can watch the same thing and see different things. I did not take it as a positive report at all. One of the first things they mention is trucking companies turning applicants away. They also bring up about them being picky now offering no incentives and show the how retention has increased in todays job environment. I did think the opening line was worded wrong compared to the rest of the piece.

There is an implied message here . "Carriers are being picky so train at Driving Solutions to impress the carriers . " Why does the report mention the $30,000 pay with only 3 weeks training then go on to mention CDL requirements ? Admittedly they give more facts than other reporters but they may do that as CYA . Nobody can say they weren't warned .

I also read it as a promo piece for getting into trucking. Right at the beginning, it says while everyone is downsizing and struggling in the economy, the trucking industry is flourishing.

A promo piece to say hey, where else can you go to school for only 3 weeks and then earn $30000/yr as a start. It told about a guy who had his own contracting biz for 30 years, now the housing biz is dead, so .. he became a trucker! And while the industry used to have a challenge recruiting drivers due to long hours and small living quarters, hey, these big sleepers aren't so bad! They did say applicants are being turned away, and gave a few examples of what is required to qualify, but I'll bet it got a lot of unemployed people thinking about it as an option.

They should really do another piece on 'the other side'...

What if, in the year or so that it takes for freight to come back, the rif-raf drivers are culled out. If the standard is being raised and educated people with professional backgrounds replace them then we may see a more civil culture among drivers.

Naa, I'm just dreaming.

But what if;

Safer drivers
Civil conversations on the cb
Cleaner restrooms and parking lots
etc...

That may happen to some degree . In the meantime current students end up with a useless CDL and if they do get hired will have to pay for a refresher course . If the economy picks up though so will other fields besides trucking and the more educated will turn there . I've read many posts on other forums by trucking school wannabes . Many of them won't improve the image much .

I was at Driver Solutions/C1 when they shot that piece. Just graduated and got my Class A yesterday. I have been hearing news about the carrier I am suppose to go to. Cutting back drivers, picking out only the best who graduate, etc. Hope things work out ok...
