Canada Newbie Mistake

Hi,

I had a load in Toronto coming back to the US. This was about 3PM or so. I was told it was for a 7AM delivery to Romulus, Michigan. Living in Flint, I was going to clear the load in Pt Huron & sleep at my house until I needed to leave for Romulus.

I filled out the Inward Cargo Manifest w/ Pt Huron as the port of arrival. Then I get called & was told it could go straight through. They told me that I should come through Detroit & I could also pick up my Customs Sticker (their office is in Windsor) & save $5 every time I cross back into the states.

This was all well & good except for one thing. LIKE A DORK I FORGOT TO MAKE A NEW MANIFEST & PUT DETROIT AS THE ENTRY POINT.

I got to the border & the US Customs officer said that it should have been cleared in Pt Huron & told me to go inside. (I should make it clear he was very nice, no attitude or anything). I went inside to the broker & they told me the same thing, that it should have been cleared in Pt Huron. I was more than willing to go back across & clear the load through Pt Huron. The broker didn't think that would be a good idea.

While in there, one of the truckers who was also waiting said that I could get a letter in the mail saying I would be fined. That it could be 6 months later. The broker said that no, that wasn't correct. She said I'd know in 10 minutes when I went next door. They'd tell me right then & there if I was to get fined.

I then went next door & told the US Customs officer what had happened. He asked how big my truck was. I told him a cargo van. He asked what I had in there (4 little boxes) & he didn't say anything about a fine.

What I'm wondering is this. Would he have told me right then like the broker said or is this something I'm going to have to wonder about for months to come?

Thanx in advance for your time,
Danny

Hopefully RobA can shed a little light on this for you. I know Jeff Jensen is working on another article that deals with this issue.

In the meantime - our fingers are crossed.

Thanks for posting this. So far, I have not had any Canada runs but am seriously looking into this issue.

Danny, I think we may work for the same company. Drop me an e-mail and I can help you wiyh any questions you may have about Thompson. [email protected] As to your issue here, I don't know. Dispatch probably didn't know if you had done your fax yet or not. A PAPS is for a particular border. A FAST load can be cleared at any border.
