I have been driving for 15 yrs, my wife recently got her CDL class B permit, and she is hazmat endorsed. Is there any company out there that will hire a team when only one has the full CDL and let the other one get the experience they need?

Hi,

I checked into this and I understand that some carriers will allow you to have a 2nd seat with a permit.....pending taking the test.

You may want to look at the classified section of this website under Driving Jobs /Teams Wanted...I think a few recent posts have been looking for people such as yourself and your wife....

Good Luck....

Many of the bigger companies put an end to this, as the spouce would never take the road test and actually get the CDL, and just keep renewing the permit. This became a problem with insurance companies when accidents were occuring when the permitted driver was not an actual licensed driver. I THINK, but am not positive, that the CMVSR rules changed recently to no longer allow drivers who only hold learners permits to drive outside of their perspective state. This was either a federal thing or something many of the states have adopted. I do know that in NY where I live, a learner's permit is not valid outside of the state, regardless of license class.

Having one driver with only a permit defeats the purpose of teams.

A person driving with a permit is required to be under supervision of a licensed driver at all times while behind the wheel.

Therefore the licensed driver never gets a chance to turn in to sleep.

It would be like a single driver after he has been working 11 hours.

But a lot of what was going on was this: If the spouce/teammate with permit was pulled over, they would just awaken the teammate who would jump into the passenger seat. I'm pretty sure about the CMVSR ruling with the CDL's, as driver trainees for companies must have the CDL before starting work with the road trainer.
