We had one guy that I swear should have been a tour guide. His price was $20.00 for his directions and he rode on our step for about 4 blocks explaining the directions. We told him the general area we needed to be in as he did not need to know the exact location. This guy was amazing he knew every street we needed to go across and all of the sites we would see. He was his worth his weight in gold and we really appreciated his help. He was a nice guy and we appreciated him. Does this happen every time I do not know I just know we got a good one.

We used to get off of I-278 because of the "low clearance" and then have to take Atlantic Ave across Brooklyn which is a miserable excuse for a road.

Then I started to notice that when I got off, there were 18 wheelers going on past the "low clearance" warning. Well guess what? it isn't really all that low and we have made it across the I-278 many times since then and never had a problem.

How tall is your truck? Which lane to you run? Linda, I worry not only about the one "bad" guy you could run into but the liabilty with FedEx and insurance and all that stuff. Don't mind seeing a guy working for a buck at all, but, what if one was to get hurt? Fall off the step? The thought of that runs shivers down my back. Layoutshooter

You are very lucky that one of NYC's finest did not see that, because quaranteed you would have been cited for it. I sure would hate to be the one explaining that to the Fed.

For $20.00 you could get yourself a pretty good street map of all 5 boroughs of NYC and not have to worry about some crazy person hanging on your truck.

Thanks for the info, we are about 13'3" I would love to get where I can have one of those lazer measurements done. We did it with a tape measure. I always worry if I got it right so I tend to give it another inch or two, just to be safe. Layoutshooter

We were told by a FECC driver that lives in NYC that if the clearance sign is yellow that you have at least 6+ inches more than the sign says.

But if the clearance sign is white, that is the exact height. This info has served us well in the city in the 4 years since he told us that, as we routinely travel under the elevated train tracks that are marked at 12' 9" in many places in NYC.

The bridges in that area are marked 1 foot lower than they really are the reason is for snow buildup in the winter yes a 13.6 can make the bridge without any problems but come winter you may be in trouble if there is a heavy buildup of snow on the road

You bring up a good point Layout with the insurance and the guy on running board. I imagine there were 20 guys working those blocks at a minimum.

It is a good point: how can the driver be held responsible for someone jumping onto the step of the truck? How are we supposed to dislodge him, without risking injury to him?

I don't think that you would want to confront anyone like that,I would just let him see that I was dialing 911 on the cell phone.

We took that exit once.

I repeat "once!"

It was a lonely feeling heading down that ramp and looking back up at all the other trucks continuing on and completely ignoring the sign.

We could have used a good step scout on that one.

Here is a suggestion Layshooter: Next time spray some non stick Pam on the steps and handles.

Well, I give all of you a thumbs up for working NYC area. Guess I ain't no expediter like y'all. The last one that jumped on my running board was in Atlanta and it scared the pee-gezus out of me so bad that I pulled into an intersection before I realised it. The idiot on the running board jumped off and started calling me a crazy SOB. Said I was trying to kill him. Wanted someone to call the law. He was gonna sue my company. And went on and on. As soon as traffic cleared, I high tailed it for about 2 blocks and then pulled over and tried to recompose myself. Now, everytime I see someone standing around an intersection, I prepare for what I am going to do if they jump on my running board. It is a shame that it has become this way in our great country.
