New Safety Rules Coming... Reactions?

So, all the safety evaluations and the rules surrounding them are scheduled to change in June of this year, for both drivers and carriers.

I'm working on a piece for EO and am dedicating a portion of it to driver and carrier reactions, so I'm really interested to see what you think. What are your reactions and thoughts on the new rules and evaluations? Do you think it'll work better than those that have been used in the past?

There's a chance I'll quote you, as usual. Thanks in advance for your help!

Do a search of the archives. It was throughly discussed/ranted about recently.

Oh, before he says it. If you really want to know, go spend a year doing what your wanting to know, after all thats the only way to truly understand the subject at hand. :D Just kidding.

Oh God Jim, you like to rag on me :p

Well there is some truth to it, right?

Anyway, which safety changes are you talking about Jason?

CSA 2010?

Mental health DOT requirements?

Diabetics/Fat truckers (BMI)/Sleep Apnea changes?

CSA 2010 -

What are your reactions and thoughts on the new rules and evaluations?

At first I thought BS, more BS until I went to the little conference on the subject. Then after it was explained on a better level than the cowboy trucker speak, it made sense but didn't go far enough.

Do you think it'll work better than those that have been used in the past?

No not really.

This is a new reporting system, not a preventive or real corrective system. I think it was borne out of the need to appease big companies and special interest groups. Unlike the DOT physical process which identifies poor health issues that can have an effect on public safety and puts corrective action in place right from the start, this new program doesn't identify problems until they get caught by an authority. Bad driving is not mitigated or corrected when it is needed - during training.

As with anything that the government does there might be some small benefit from this. If you really want to understand the
"whys and whats" of this look up "money grab" in the dictionary.

There are wayyy to many driving, and that will be driving that do/will aspire to be no more than great, (not even exceptional) steering wheel holders, and exceptional pay check takers. Therefore, the sign of the times will tell us..... thay will be little or no change, unless thay got a really big stick thay ain't told about.
